Don't forget to check the physical dimensions!
I'd say 8u is 99% sure to be OK replacing 7uF, but I wouldn't stray much further from the original value without proper thought.....

I am only using the Standard Editing interface, do you need to be using the Enhanced Interface Editor?

Maybe it's just an age thing

Thanks every body for your input and comments, I have lots to think about now and lots of info to use, hopefully the kind gesture by GraemeS to try the 6-8Hf capacitors will either cure the problem with the motor, or rule out the capacitor as the fault and lead me to find something else as a possible solution.

I work with uF and ohms and stuff all the time, if you get clever and use the character map, sooner rather than later it gets copied into some other package and comes out as gibber.
Stick with u for micro, everyone knows what you mean, it works for me.

If you are using windows 7 or later its one of the "apps" among the Windows accessories

Not just the voltage that's important but the capacitor has to be rated Continuous and AC

I am on windows 7 on a PC so it's in the start up menu.
