Woolverstone vs Levington?

If its not essential its the Orwell how about the Tidemill on the Deben, right by the station and Woodbridge, handy if perhaps you are working in the area, not so handy if you are a keen day/weekend sailor as opposed to a long term cruiser looking for a temporary bolthole.

I don’t think there is actually much difference between the Woolverstone and SYH travel wise from the centre of Ipswich... shotley is an extra 10-15 minutes by car... from home near Nottingham SYH is actually the fastest to get too.

shotley has the advantage of the bus dropping practically in the marina, But the fare is probably not far off the UBER off peak fare to SYH...

The facilities at SYH are substantially superior to Woolverstone or Shotley IMHO.... the chandlery is better, the lightship is more reliable and more likely to be open... the WC facilities are easily in the top three in the U.K... and the location is far superior for walking, wildlife, and general peace and tranquility... plus there is even a decent beach just a short walk away.. plus of course the marina itself is more sheltered than Woolverstone... with no busy lock to wait for like shotley.

Foxes and the basin are miles from the sea, plus foxes is basically surrounded by wasteland and industrial facilities...

And really excellent, expert, thoughtful, long term staff.

Oh, and also agree about the excellent chandlery at SYH.

I think that’s swung it, thanks Photodog.

I think I’ll start off on the pontoon, I’ll check the mooring prices but if it’s just for a month or three I’ll go for luxury.

I came down to Burnham on the train last night and it was tipping it down, so nice to just walk along the pontoon.

I’ll think I’ll just have to put up with the Uber fares. In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t make that much difference.

If I really like it I may keep my new boat there for a season.

Thanks for all the replies, it would be a faff to drive around everywhere and as I’ve never been before I love to arrive in the boat first to get an idea of the place.
