hi, i am in the process of completely restoring a kestrel 22,a wooden centreboard sloop (carvel mahogany hull on oak frames) designed by j francis jones, and built by cd pugh of barry south wales. i would like to make contact with any other owners of these yachts, with a view to forming a group/contacts, with the aim of sharing infomation etc. my yacht 'bluebelle' has a sail no 103, and i understand there were over 300 built, mainly clinker hull construction . i wonder if anyone else out there either owns a kestrel 22 or knows of someone who owns one. please get in touch. thanks

There are loads about the place

Many were built in Woodbridge, where they were designed, and the shed they were built in is still called "the Kestrel shed". Jolly nice boats. But I don't know of an Owner's Association - they could do with one!

Re: There are loads about the place

hi,
yes, many kestrels were built in woodbridge and their designer j francis jones lived i think in waldringfield not far away. my yacht 'bluebelle of gwent was in fact built in barry south wales by mr cd pugh, and was raced successfully in and around the bristol channel area throughout the 60's and early 70's. there used to be an owners association but alas this folded some years ago. i am looking to contact owners and really anyone who can shed some light on the kestrel, with a view to seeing if we can get together to form a group or something. kind regards ian

I had one some years ago. If you slept on it the water made a trickling sound under the keel all night. Weird. I don't believe there is an owners assoc but I think there is a group of Kestrels clustered in one of the harbours near Dublin which is sort of organised. Unfortunately I can't remember which harbour.

I recently bought a Kestrel 22. The hull was built by F. Hall & Sons of Walton-on-the-Naze in 1963. She was completed by the purchaser. An owners' association would be a good idea - wouldn't mind helping to get something going.

Re: There are loads about the place

I've recently been restoring 'Katydid', now on hardstanding in Robertsons boatyard @ Woodbridge, only yards from the Kestrel shed. Hope to get her into a mud berth before long to soak up over the winter, and then sail her next season.
Made lots of mistakes so far ... but she is beginning to look a bit like a boat again.
There are another six Kestrels in various states of repair and disrepair within a mile of here ... saw one sailing up the Deben last weekend!
What amazes me is that they are all very different within the basic hull design ... one even has an old inboard diesel.
There's a venerable old carpenter who has a fund of anecdotes about the class who works about the yard occasionally.

Even if I only have a GRP-Version of the Kestrell 22, I would also like to know about an Owner Association. Marco-Polo was build in 1968 as a bilge Keel version in Woodbridge and delivered to Hamburg, Germany in May 1969 and has the sails no 226.

Hi All, I also have a Kestrel 22, also in Woodbridge, I never realised why there are so many down there. If anyone is intrested in starting an online group I would definately be interested.

I don't know much about the boats history, I have been told mine is a 1967 but not totally sure

P.S. if anyone wants one there is a nice example on Ebay at the moment

Hello,
the creation of an "online"-Forum for Kestrells would be a good idea. We could than discuss a lot of problems occuring while restoring our Kestrells.

Re: There are loads about the place

I've been searching for a Kestrel owners assn for ages. I sail a tupperware version around the Wash. She is named ANGELEE with sail no 212.
Formerly known as ALBATROSS and built approx 1966/7. I know of one in Germany, A wooden version lives on the river Welland and there is reputed to be a small fleet in Clontarff Eire.
I am trying to find ther history of mine and am interested in contact with other owners.

My Kestrel Angelee originally Albatross was built in 1966 or 67, sail no 212 she is a bilge keel version in GRP
Can any Kestrel owner out there come up with the optimum rake for the mast. She is full Bermuda rigged and the mast is 26' tall.
Here's hoping some wise old mariner knows.

I will certainly be posting there, although a wooden boatwright for many years, there's always something we can learn.
