While I'm no stranger to canoeing without a certificate (multi-day unassisted lake trips -including some less than idea weather and water- in my case), I'm not sure that quote fits, Yantlet.

Better drowned than duffers if not duffers won't drown was saying they'd been taught and knew what to do... that is "not duffers" and so wouldn't drown.
It wasn't just "oh sod it, read about how to sail it and you'll be right".

You're right about common sense... but not all of it is common sense. That's where instruction comes in handy.

This is s coming from a guy who's self taught at skiing, snowboarding and avalanche avoidance/rescue though... seriously NO stranger to going, uninstructed, into potentially lethal situations.
 
Well, I hope I dont drown, and actually thanks for the reminder that it isnt a toy..fair point.
Back on topic, I m going for a Selway Fisher design,,chosen as it is stable, and shorter build time. There are some stunning home builds, but I really dont have 200+ hours to spare !
 
I toyed with the idea of making a strip planked canoe a while back. I watched a ton of videos that followed builds from planks of wood to a finished, glassed canoe.
It looks like a blast, but it's not a cheap bit of fun. I was shocked at how much a decent set of plans and all the materials could come to... and that's assuming you've got the kit you'll need to actually make the thing.

Some day though... some day. :)

Build a duck punt

it paddles as well as any canie

it sails brilliantly

the plans are free

I made mine ligher and it came out at about 80lbs
