wood scraper

can anyone tell me the name of the scraper that is burgundy in colour and has replaceable blades, I think from memory it was a German sounding name, I used to own one but alas it got lost years ago

Skarsten - but they seem to have gone out of business. Faithfull or Bahco apparently do something similar

Skarsten are no longer trading but the above is for sale on ebay

Blades aren't made any more seemingly so you have to re-sharpen them.

Does anyone know whether the Faithfull blades fit?

Skarsten it is. They come up regularly on eBay. I have a vast collection of them. If I spent more time scraping and varnishing and less time buying scrapers I would have an immaculate boat.

I've been useing one of these, for both old varnish and I did the bottom of the boat. Goes through at least 10 years worth of old antifoul no problem.....

Does anyone know whether the Faithfull blades fit?

Yes, they do, but they are shaped differently so you can't sharpen them like a Skarsten blade. They also don't stay sharp for long. I have abandoned using my faithful Skarstens and have gone over to the type shown in BarryH's post - there are various makes and the tungsten carbide blades go on for ages. I've a 27-foot wooden boat and have taken 40 years worth of paint off the hull with two similar to that and a hot-air gun, then scraped off lots of varnish, and I'm just recently on to the second edge of the blade.

Harris Scraper. I got mine from Screwfix, about 8 quid IIRC. Double sided tungsten blade. Still on the first side of mine.

Harris Scraper

+1 for Harris Scraper. You can get a really good purchase on old antifoul and varnish with these.....be careful of the edge and gelcoat though!
