I have a old boat that needs a re wire. Would any one know if there is such a thing as a pre wired kit with all the norn swiches for a 12.5m motor boat.

Any help would be great.

Hi I doubt it, you would be better to start from scratch, but first plan exactly what you want to install first like wiring for basic domestics, engine loom, any extra gauges, then your nav gear, look around for a complete nav package deal and stick to it, if you cant afford it all at once just have the boat wired to the point and leave the buying till later, like electric toilets etc, also work out how many batteries you need first, I have been to so many boats with power problems to see the owner thinks a caravan battery will power the boat for weeks at a time!

You also need to incorporate a shore power system along with protection and the correct size battery charger for your consumption and decide what heating system to have, believe me it all adds up so get it right first time.

I have seen a few boats in my time that have been sunk and asked to rewire including a Fairline sq 50, believe me once a boats strpped out of its linings and floor panels etc its amazing what goes into a build at the outset.

Rewiring is also a nice opportunity to get a custom panel made up, with everything laid out and neatly labelled specifically for your installation. I designed mine in Omnigraffle and sent the file to a laser engraver, and back came a sheet of plastic with all the text and lines (and little boat silhouette and name) crisply engraved and all the cutouts for switches and gauges etc exactly to the sizes specified on their datasheets.

Of course I left a couple of circuits for future expansion, but I'm dreading the day when they have to be labelled with Dymo (I do at least have some white-on-black flat tape to match) instead of beautifully engraved like the rest :)
