I've just bought a plug in double USB converter that goes in a 12v socket. Only a fiver but looks a bit cheesy.

Thanks Nigel, but I already have a couple of 12v sockets installed so I just wanted the usb.
I initially made up my own bulkhead usb from a plug in one, but I wasn't happy with it.

I note that some are rated 1a some 2a. How do you know which to use for what? My adapter is unmarked so is it 1 or 2?

Multimeter, I guess? On USB, the outside contacts in the socket are carrying power - test the current across those, I think.

Thanks for that. It appears my modern gadgets won't be damaged. The old gadgets don't have USB anyway.

They wouldn't be damaged even if the USB could provide 100A, they just take what they need. However, many modern devices need 2A or more.
