One of the joys of sailing for me is to escape that dreadful idiot's lantern ashore. I do listen to the radio a lot, but nothing would persuade me to install a TV. The perfect day for me is a sunny one with a good breeze and a test match in progress.

I didn't post this on the Digital TV thread as I didn't want to hijack it, and I appreciate that a problem with a TV is as boaty and real as any other if you do have a TV afloat. Also, it's posted by a new user and I don't think it would be a very friendly response on my part.

Am I alone here and in the dark ages, or do my esteemed colleagues shun TV afloat?

I'm with you pal. Its good to get away from the box and all the complaints that there's nothing on it. As for digital, lots of channels with nothing on apparently.

I'd agree. The boys sometimes ask - but the pro is that when we see any of our friends, th sprogs immediately want to go and visit 'cos everyone else has Tv (and most have a playstation or two), so I get P&Q.

One of my chums has got 4 TV's on board and 2xPS2, for gawds sake. One of the joy's is actually sitting on a quiet evening, maybe reading, maybe radio or music, but certainly able to listen to others.

One of the joys of boating to me, is taking a plentiful supply of books, and having the time and peace to read them, while listening to the water, or the rain, or whatever is going on outside.

Really don't want a tv on board

I don't think it's an either or question. I am a Radio 4 addict so radio is a must. I occasionly play tapes or read books. Also, when I am on my own, to sit and watch a TV drama or a series I've been following is also enjoyable.
But, sorry to say tome, I don't enjoy listening to or watching cricket.

I would go a stage further to be honest , although this may be beacause of the naivity of a newby, but because I work in IT and am surrounded by technology (and some of the geeks that go with it) when I eventually get my boat I am loathed to have anything apart from what is considered essential for safetys sake.

I would like to think that I'll give the GPS bit a miss (at least until I am able to navigate "properly") I doubt I could make it through a football season without listening to Alan Green on Five Live (his commentaries are the best in the business, especially if the ref is having a 'mare..) so a radio would be a must but definitely no TV and no computers and no games consoles..

I have TV, but in the season it doesn't get used. (Falls down and nothing English on anyway) I have satellite for the winter months when I'm laid up in some marina or other and can mount it ashore. I also have DVD/video etc. For watching rental or owned movies/documentaries again in the winter. I also have a mountain of books, which get read when I have the time. If I want total peace and queit I sail the dinghy.

Our cruise along the northern French and Belgium coast last year was bliss, no TV, no Newspapers, no kids dvd, video or games console.and only the weather reports on the radio.(although did let them have a tape recorder for their book tapes). We talked more and did more things together that we would have if we had all the "must have "gadgits with us.And it was fun to catch up with the gossip when we got home.
Im with you TV and the like have no place on my boat, but sorry i also do not follow the cricket./forums/images/icons/smile.gif
