Has anyone a successful method of stripping the very fine wires that come with radar, gps etc these days. (for connection purposes). My wire stripper only goes to .75mm

I know the sort ... use strippers or knife and bingo - nothing. wire is so fine that it is like hair.

So how ? Very hot soldering iron tip .... burn it off. Tried match / flame but found that too much.

I have had a set of these strippers for about 15 years now and well used too (pro). They are the best things I have used and have my name engraved into them as fellow engineers keep trying to rob them..

not cheap I am afraid, but will do everything you ask. Click photo below for link to cpc site (you may find cheaper).

These are not auto strippers, auto strippers destroy the wire. These are accurate insulation cutters, you click down to cut the insulation then either move the blades over the cut portion and lightly grip and pull away or my preferred method, cut and then pull the waste off with finger nails. Any cutters that claim to be automatic at these small sizes will break wires, we tried dozens in work and settled on this type I am describing.

p.s. this is the size you require for the jobs you have outlined. (0-25-0-8mm)

edited for clarity

IMHO all the above are too heavy / expensive - try these :

Usually £3 / 4.00 on market stalls.

The pressure is adjustable and the length stripped is adjustable too.

I use them on fine electronics / computers etc.

They don't last forever but at that price ....????

And use IDC connectors for joining wires....anything else is too heavy.

Edit :

Just reread Dogwatches post - "auto strippers destroy the wire"

These are 'auto strippers' but I don't seem to have the 'wire damage 'problem with them. Maybe they are OK when new ?

What you have is great for heavy cable, but the OP requested a stripper for fine serial data type wires as found on NMEA and radar looms. The set you show is far to big and cumbersome for that purpose. I do use a far heavier stripper for bigger wire, there is no one-fix solution I don't think.

p.s. to OP, a scalpel is a good tool and especially for coax, but takes some practice.

Depends on the insulation, but it's often possible to heat the insulation with a small lighter in the right place to soften it and just pull it off. No damage to the conductors at all.

I now use a stripper similar to the ones you have put the link to.

I find that they do most of the wire stripping but are not suitable (as one would expect) for either 25mm wire or less than 1mm wire.

I have a bit of paper which says that I am a time served Radar fitter in defence electronics. But that was issued about 40 years ago and at that time proper strippers were just appearing on the market. Ones similar to the RS ones quoted were just available but they required to be set up very carefully especially for ptfe insulated wire.
I have used various types over the years but prefer my current ones over any of the others. I think I got them from Maplin.
I must also say that I have had several pairs of similar appearance in the past and they were so poor that I almost immediately binned them.

I even managed to use them to strip the multiway cable from the radar scanner with them (with great care)

There are many very good professional wire strippers available but it is difficult to justify their cost for a single task.
