This is my first winterisation of the Yanmar 1GM on my Hunter Horizon so I have some fairly dumb questions (which do not appear to have been picked up in the magazines) and I'm still waiting on the manual from the previous owner:

Basically:
How many points of oil do I need when I perform the oil change ?
Any particular grade of oil ?
It was recommended that I also do the gear box oil - of so how much and again what type ?

Many Thanks

Use ordinary diesel engine oil for both. Engine takes app.1.3lit. or up to the mark on dipstick. Gearbox 0.25lit.or up to the mark on gauge rod. be carefull not to overfill g/box.

Look at http://www.yanmarhelp.com/Service/svc_parts.htm for some info. Not a great site but it covers the basics.

I note it also recommends oiling threads before torqueing! ;~)

While ashore, my annual jobs include:

Change the engine sacrificial anode, this is located on the side of the engine under the alternator. There is a small two bolt cover with a nut in the centre locating the anode on the inside.

Flush through water system with a mix of fresh water and one third anti-freeze

Remove the water pump impellor during time ashore and replace with new when recommissioning. Keep old one as emergency spare.

Change engine lub. oil, change lub. oil filter.

Remove air filter element and wash/dry prior to refitting – this is a sponge layer.

Change primary and secondary fuel oil filter and top up fuel tank as high as possible while ashore over winter to reduce condensation inside tank surfaces.

In sympathy with eebygum, this is my first year / winterisation / boat and I am terrified of doing the wrong thing. I also don't know much about engines other than the principles, so when you look at the manual and then at the engine which is not sitting up on a bench the two don't seem to compare.
So - How easy should it be to access the raw water input so as to "flush through water system with a mix of fresh water & 1/3 antifreeze" - So far I can't find it !
Also - the impeller removal now I can understand, but surely it would be better to change the oil etc. after the winter & before the new season ?
