winterising boat in lockdown I’m getting worried ????

Very confused, a guy posted on here about a sealine 220 and he had trouble with his big plumbs well bilge plumbs or pumps . I even told him to ask you. SORRY.
 
New National Restrictions from 5 November



You should avoid travelling in or out of your local area, and you should look to reduce the number of journeys you make. However you can and should still travel for a number of reasons, including:

  • travelling to work where this cannot be done from home
  • travelling to education and for caring responsibilities
  • hospital GP and other medical appointments or visits where you have had an accident or are concerned about your health
  • visiting venues that are open, including essential retail
  • exercise, if you need to make a short journey to do so
If you need to travel we encourage you to walk or cycle where possible, and to plan ahead and avoid busy times and routes on public transport. This will allow you to practise social distancing while you travel.

Overnight stays and holidays away from primary residences will not be allowed. This includes holidays abroad and in the UK. It also means you cannot stay in a second home, if you own one, or staying with anyone you do not live with or are in a support bubble with. There are specific exceptions, for example if you need to stay away from home (including in a second home) for work purposes, but this means people cannot travel overseas or within the UK, unless for work, education or other legally permitted reasons.
 
This means you must not leave or be outside of your home except for specific purposes. These include:

  • for childcare or education, where this is not provided online
  • for work purposes, where your place of work remains open and where you cannot work from home (including if your job involves working in other people’s homes)
  • to exercise outdoors or visit an outdoor public place

My boat is in an outdoor public place, and does not require travel to get to it.
 
Well I’ve given it a good thought and I’ve decided Even if I can’t get down before Thursday I’m definitely going anyway even if I get stopped I will pay the fine ,the boat is a new to me boat and one engine has no antifreeze in it so I’m definitely not taking the chances , I’m not getting my engines wrecked , i won’t be interacting with anyone else , so I don’t see the harm

Well it is to me if we get a frost it could right off the engines, causing tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage, ok I know that when boats are in sea water these less chance of frost damage as hull kept warmer etc but that’s not the point , what do you lot think ?

Will these selfish people who travel for essential only to them tasks be the ones moaning when lockdown is extended?
 
Here we go again. Same happened last time.

Traveling to a leisure boat unless you get a call form a marina that it is sinking / needs more lines on etc ( and even then) is never going to be considered essential.

The virus spreads by contact. The instruction is not " please avoid people" that is what t1/2/3 did in various measure and it did not work. The instruction is stay at home unless essential.

A surprising number on here decide that they are somehow special. I have news. You are not. Sadly in the Uk our enforcement of the rules is poor so you will probably get away with it, but the combined actions of everyone who thinks they are special will simply lead to lockdown being extended.

It's pretty much not worth discussing - the Marinas will have their own interpretation of the rules, and they will decide what is possible and is not possible,
The views of any self-appointed ForumCovidWombles will not be part of that decision making process.
My guess will be that the Marina will close, and I will have to hire an engineer to winterise the engines.

The marina where I keep my boat have said they don't intend to close but the main gate will be on the out of hours setting - eg needing the key to open it.
I don't see why any marina office should close as they still need to keep an eye on things , process accounts etc. There is no reason for the marina to halt any professional work on boats .

At the lockdown earlier in the year we did stay away despite the marina being in walking range from home.

Are amateurs working on boats some sort of different risk?
 
This is a very difficult area as the advice given so far has been left open to interpretation and people will view things differently. To a lot of people, their leisure boat is not only their pride and joy but also something that enables them to relax and reduce the stresses of modern day life. It would therefore be quite legitimate to argue that visiting it for a couple of hours a week is quite beneficial to them. No different than say the benefit some people get from visiting their allotment and shutting themselves away. Of course whilst you “could” make that argument , “should” you make that argument in light of the current serious situation we find ourselves in?? A very difficult area with no real right or wrong answer which is why clearer guidance is needed so everyone knows where they stand. In my view it shouldn’t be down to marina managers to decide what is right and what is not. Also of course it will depend upon how an individual views things from a moral point of view. This has become harder to manage as everyday we see people doing things far worse than sitting alone on a boat harming no one, yet we know that really we should probably not be doing it !
 
There is no suggestion this is the case.

Just like there is no basis that business travel is safer than holidays.

But those are the rules - which are aimed at minimising contact and keeping people at home. The government are seeking to consider work that put food on the table and pays taxes as essential. Tinkering with your own boat is not.

There is much to criticise Boris and pals, however the only thing proven to reduce the prevalence of this virus is a lockdown. Nothing else anywhere has worked.
 
To be fair, this was a highly likely scenario.

If it were that essential, it should have already been done! All IMO of course (y)?

I expect paid work done professionally does have a potential to be safer than DIY work in that professional/skilled people will be more aware of risks and better placed to assess them and have better tools and better PPE than the DIY amateur.

However I think you mean to ask why is paid work safer against spread of Covid virus ?
The professional people going about their work, in a marina say, will be safer if there and not lots of boat owners about . Less risk of coming into contact with others during work or when going to the loo for example. Fewer people about = less risk .
The government want people to keep working when they can other than certain sectors that are required to close. So the rules help keep those who are able to work safer against the virus.
