right here's a question for ya - where is a good place to spend the winter ( nov to april) ??

criteria are : cheap, no atlantic crossings (currently in portugal), got to have water (else boat wont float apparently)

i'm asking on behalf of the wrinkly blue hair (dad) who is on his way to the med and has heard a 'rooma' that winter berths are hard to come by

im thinking of suggesting places like balearics, canaries, azores, etc, but have done v little research - can any one kick start my lazy arse a bit ??

Balearics are saturated with yachts. Storage ashore is very expensive but some winter berths are available, occupying space vacated by boats that winter in the Carribbean. However, following Sept 11, almost no boats went last year so there were no winter berths.

My info is that overwintering on the Spanish mainland is much cheaper than on the islands

Try Port El Kantoui in Tunisia. Would be cheaper than N / W of Med, and easy access via charter flights to Monastir. My chum wintered there last year, and is back there again this year. You can make it in a relaxed weeks trip from Southern Sardinia with one overnight passage, and day sails the rest of the way, with some good stops en route.
