Has anyone ever wintered afloat in the Balearics? If so, which port, how safe, how much?
We are thinking of wintering there from October-April this year, prior to hopping over to Sardinia, and would be glad of any advice on weather, availability of berths etc.

Here is what I wrote some months ago:

"As already mentionned in a earlier post, I discovered - to my surprise - a half empty Formentera Mar marina last week (Feb. 22 2003).

The management spontaneously gave me its "Offertas de Invernada" valid from Oct. 1st till May 31st., and showing what appears to me pretty cheap prices: e.g. it would cost for your boat (less than 14 m.) 238 Euros for 1 month, or 1521 Euros for 8 months, water (expensive in Formentera) and electricity NOT included.

Formentera, the middle of nothing right now (speak wintertime) has good communications to Ibiza (1/2 hour small ferry, at least 5 times a day) which in turn has pretty good connections to the world, particularly to GB, even during the winter months."

In the mean time I found at Colonia San Pere, a new small marina on the south coast of the Alcudia bay on Mallorca. At the moment, the marina seems to be half empty. For how long ???

Pls. feel free to PM if you have more questions or suggestions.

Thanks. I missed your earlier post. Formentera Mar have an impressive Web site. But I imagine it gets a bit cut off in December/Jan when the wind's up......
Colonia San Pere doesn't seem to have a valadero, and we need to haul out at some point.
We have no experience of the Balearics at all. We intend to leave from Mahon to Sardinia in the Spring. Do people over-winter at Mahon, or is it totally full up, I wonder?

Winter berths were available at Bonaire (near Pollensa) last year. This is the marina whose wall collapsed in the big blow two years ago but it has now been completely rebuilt and appears(!) to be very substantial. Full facilities.

Colonia San Pere is still in the building stage. There is a place which could well become the varadero, but there is neither a crane nor a travelift right now.
Never mind, Alcudia, or even Pollensa are literally "next door", and you'll find everything you may need there.
Mahon is very well equipped, and you'll find everything there ..... except a free berth!

I left my boat in Porto Colom for three years, just bows on to the small harbour wall.
Wasn't cheap and bumpy in a southerly. However you could then anchor in the western
bay which was more sheltered. Haven't been back for a few years though. Anyone
know the current situation?

We called in to Porto Colom this Feb en route from Sardinia. They have now laid about 60 moorings in the old anchorage. Many were occupied. We understand that the charge - if applied - would be about 2 -3 euro per day. Colom is nice but a little isolated. You would need to be fairly self sufficient by Balearic standards.

Sounds like a good place to stop off, but we need to be attached to the shore for longer stays, as we have a cat on board who likes walkies...thanks anyway!
