Wintering in Sardinia

If you want to keep the boat out of the water a good marina is Nautica Pinna at Bosa. Very professional and trustworthy. I think they give a discount to CA members. It is about 1hr bus ride from Alghero.

I suggest you try a pm to MapisM of this forum. He keeps his boat in Sardinia and I am sure would be pleased to advise.

We will be doing Sardinia this summer but returning Ragusa in Sicily for the winter. Had a fantastic time there this year and 90% of the boats are coming back next year. It is safe, plenty to do over winter, good value and lots of live aboards and cheap flights from 2 nearby airports.

I had a bad experience leaving my boat in Porto Rotondo over winter a few years ago. I paid a local company to look after the boat and carry out some basic maintenance but when I returned in the Spring clearly they had done absolutely nothing. Mapism of this parish has his boat in Carloforte in the south of the island and is a very helpful chap so worth a PM

If you want a general description of Sardinia, and possible layup ports around the coast, see http://www.jimbsail.info/mediterranean/west-med/sardinia

For more port details, you'll find a link on that page to the Italian Blue book, which lists facilities and gives layout maps for all Italian registered ports.

Which place you choose for wintering will depend very much how you value local culture versus live-aboard social life. Cagliari is a winner for local culture (as is Cartagena in Spain). And as Nostro points out, Ragusa in Sicily competed well this winter for live-aboard social life. But the live-aboard social scenes do vary season to season, with special price offers causing mass migrations at short notice!

All this info is courtesy of contributors to my web site, a very helpful bunch!

Just back from a recce in Sardinia. We plan to base our boat in Cagliari. We looked at the 3 marinas there.
Marina Karalis in the centre of town so step ashore for the shops and bars c£4000 for the year and no showers.
marina del Sole... popular with liveaboards... very basic and uncared for but the staff ( apparently ) do care for your boat, shower and toilets in tent, basic but possible! crane and storage ashore possible. c £2500
marina St Elemo... more upmarket and better facilities, the guys seemed professional and said they made a point of checking all moorings ( lines) every day c £3000

The last 2 are a short bus ride from the town centre or a short bike ride off road on the sea front.

We plan to book in at St Elemo.

Good flights from Cagliari and just 5mins by train (£1) right into the airport

Cagliari is a great town as Jim says. This year I spent ten days there b4 continuing to Cartagena!
Incidentally Cartagena has very few liveaboards this winter, they may have gone to Ragusa!!
However Cagliari has had in the past and may well still do, a big fouling problem with shellfish.
There are boatyards next to the marinas to clear it though!!

Thanks to all of you for responding. I should have clarified that we will not be living on the boat during the winter. I also have no real need to take the boat out of the water. Mostly looking for a cheap safe place. We have kept the boat at Marina di Ragusa for the past two winters. Very happy leaving it with them. But would like to not have to take the boat all the way back there if we can find a compairable marina on Sardinia.

I am following up on the suggestions you have made. Let me know if you have any others to add.

Etesian.

Kept boat at Aquatica Marina Alghero for two years. Very satisfied, one of the managers is the HLR. Frequent cheap flights through out year. Lovely town with excellent restaurants several open all year.

We were in Cagliari for the winter, once in the water and on board, twice on the hard. See our web site. We strongly recommend Antonello at Marina del Sole if you are lifting out, rather than the St Elmo crowd, for various reasons. Cagliari is a great place. See our website (places page) for more information.

We had our boat on the hard in cagliari marina del sole for a few months which was fine & affordable. I wouldn't want to keep it in the water long term there without being on it (for a variety of reasons Inc serious fouling) but some do without many issues I understand. Basic facilities but had some jobs done which were OK. Friendly guys there although the old guy (forgot his name) is a bit of a character. Cagliari is own of our favourites in the med, great town. Day sails limited though. Sardinia and corsica are amazing sailing regions, as is italy. Enjoy!

+1 for Club Aquatica Alghero, couldn't be more helpful, also will do deals for cash, the bloke next door at Elmo, if he is still there, is a knob.

Alghero is great.
Spent two winters there and the price was very negotiable with the excellent Fabritzio. Summer prices are simply insane!!
Very convenient for Alghero airport and Ryanair flights.
