Thanks for posts on the merits of mooring Buoys versus Pontoons..I'm going for a buoy in Conwy 2 questins arise.

Can anyone tell me about wintering ashore in that part of the world (for a 32 foot M/S) I would be looking for somewhere secure and with power. An idea of costs for storage and lifting/out would be appreciated?

SWIMBO has has finally admitted that she is not enjoying sailing (is it me or the boat?) as much these days she feels that she would be happier if there were other people 'around', can anyone tell me about the Conwy Cruising Club? it sounds as if SWIMBO might meet other ladies there and as if there are some joint sailing trips organised ?

Yourcomments/advice appreciated

I think the main laying-up options are the two marinas at Conwy (pricey), Dickies of Bangor, ABC at Beaumaris, Port Dinorwic and maybe Rhyll. I lay-up at ABC because its a bit cheaper, has decent & secure facilities, and I've found them to be quite obliging. It's a bit further to get to but Beaumaris is always a lovely place to visit.

I've been a member of the NWCC for the past season but because I live in Leeds I haven't been able to get as involved as I would have liked. The club is very friendly with a cosy clubhouse and provides the invaluable launch service at weekends during the season (discounted for club members). If you haven't already, check out the website at www.nwcc.info.

I phoned round this year for a 29' and in order of cheapest first:

1. ABC
2= Dickies and Holyhead
3. Dinas Boatyard
4. Port Dinorwic

I tried ABC but they were booked up as of August...I think they have an adequate supply of regulars. Port Penryhn has been shut down which has probably increased demand at ABC and then just last week I hear that Dickies is up for sale so if that gets turned in to housing...add the new marina at Beaumaris and we'll all be looking for a field somewhere!

About £100 for lifting (each way) and £15 per week storage, though some charge more for lifts and less to store and vice versa. Add chocking (40-ish) and mast drops (60-ish each way) to that if applicable.

The trip normally takes just over 2 hours. Have done it in an hour and three quarters but that wasn't completely legal.

Other options are douglas boatyard to the South of Preston, Fleetwood and Jalsea Marine in Northwich (Cheshire in land up the Ship canal and R Weaver) - only issue is the end of season passage making...

Also Trinity Marine at holyhead but thats another half hour from Bangor

Thanks to all for the information. I looked at Fleetwood, they seemed cheap for the season but apparently you had to pay for a whole year even if you just wanted to winter there.
Will try the others, I'm looking at next winter as I will be ashore at Ardrossan this winter.
Anyone know the way from Ardrossan to Conwy? out of the Clyde and South is the current extent of my knowledge!!

That's pretty reasonable knowledge:
Option 1 (Irish) - Bangor (NI) - Howth (Ireland) - Conwy
Option 2 (IOM) - Portpatrick (Galloway) - Douglas/ Port St Mary (IOM) - Conwy
Option 3 (non-Stop) - Wait for a depression to have passed to the North, so you have NW winds all the way and Go 4 It (one night at sea)

TLC at Conwy have a secure yard for boat storage. I was there Dec03 to Jun04 and found it very good. There is CCTV all over the place and entry is via a magnetic fob. It cost me £16 a week for a 31' Rival. Power and water is available although you may need a long extension lead depending on where you are put.
The marina will do the lift out and the transport over to the TLC yard at the going rate for a liftout etc.
