I have been locking at weather charts for the Ionian for the winter. Temperatures looks reasonable but the amount of rain seems to be high. Whats the reality? rain all day every day? heavy rain at times and then nice weather?

Another question is:
Would it be realistic to plan to anchor in Nidri/Vlikho over the winter?

Your second statement is the nearest to accurate. this is the wetest part of greece in winter but not coldest. nidri at tranquil bay is well sheltered. vlikho is a deadend inlet and also has good shelter. vlikho is very shallow but if you are ok with 2to3 metres -more in centre you will be safe. there is a small marina there with low costs and some small british boats stay there for all the year.

Your English has improved dramatically since the 'holding tank' post below, Ken_Irby. See what some practice can do to your language skills! Already in the third post, amazing!

I have lived in the Ionian full time for four years, in that time, we have been snowed in for three days, with serious ice bringing the pylons down, luckily it only lasted a week. We have had christmas dinner on the balcony in tee shirts the same year.
The reallity is, its warmer than the uk, If you imagine when it bounces down and you think, look at that! it can do that here for three days and nights non stop, and the electrical storms are the most amazing I have ever seen. Then for the next few days the sun will be out and the skies blue, till the next front rolls in. You can go around in just a jumper and jeans most days, but when the sun goes down (Its light till 5pm at christmas) the temperature drops. Very contrasty but that is why it stays green most of the year, we really need rain Now, we have seen none since April.

[/ QUOTE ] Yes. Safest method for all weathers would be to run onto the mud in Tranquil bay with a couple of stern anchors out, and a line ashore.

Weather? Two to four periods of 'unsettled weather' a month. What's unsettled weather? A session of two to four days of variable cloud cover which will sometimes include incredible thunderstorms, brief sessions of 50kt winds, or even just two days of rain. Settled weather? Lovely and sunny, light breezes, chilly evenings.

Once every five or ten years or so there may be a prolonged frost - a couple of days. Kills off the lemon trees, and they're common, so prolonged frost is very rare . . .

Definately, Goto Vlikho and let Ruari and Vicky at the yachtclub look after you. They organise plenty of things to do in the winter to keep one active and lubricated. Boatyard is intresting but it is a safe method and I have worked in a yard in Scotland that used this in the 80's!
