I've had plenty of really enjoyable winter sails; the wind is more predictable and steady, you don't have the sunburn problem that you have in summer and the water isn't so crowded. Here in Melbourne we have Winter Series club racing each year to take advantage of these milder conditions. I can imagine that for someone who doesn't like sailing anyway, any time of the year is stupid. If you wear warm clothing, there's no reason why you shouldn't enjoy yourself. You'll probably be more careful not to fall into the 'oggin during winter.
Peter.
My SWMBO just went to Dunkerque and back over the weekend, which was horrible on Monday coming back to Ramsgate, but otherwise some fine sailing. Might be cold, wet, but it will still be an adventure!
Very pleasant in my limited experience. A bit of a pain removing clothing and putting it back on every time you go below, and you suffer a slightly claustrophobic feeling with all the gear on like Michelin man. A bit like being a pig in a sock. But on a cold, sunny day it feels like a real coup. (I am referring here to south and east coasts of England - can't comment on the Hebrides!)
Well done all of you. I didn't feel stupid. Instead I really enjoyed the day and soon had the heater back on, once I had got back on my impossible berth. Getting Bosun back on her berth, stern to, is almost impossible.
Cheers all and happy winter sailing.
Hello All, Kevin here, having only put my recently bought Hurley 22 in the water I have decided there it will stay this year and in the last month I have had some jolly good sails, not far, only out into Torbay but nonetheless it has been pretty good and last Saturday the sun was out and my wife and I enjoyed our pic nic lunch with hardly another boat in sight and we both agreed that to be out in early December without feeling too cold is a real bonus. I dont have any heating on board apart from the double meths burner but even that was unnecessary, just the thermals, fleece shirt and fleece jacket and a nice cup of fresh coffee.
I hope to go out over Christmas if we have some sunny days and the cill opening times are appropriate.
