First question. where can I buy a bare boat 28 to 32 ft. sports cruser style. I would consider building a boat over a two or three year project.
question two. would I be mad to even consider this ?
another question. Would such a project keep you off drink or drive you to it ?

i think i'm quite well placed to answer this one.

you can search the local yards for the hull you're looking for, with the intention of fitting engines/shafts/drives if required...

boats and outboards is also a good place to look under projects (it's about the right time of year now)...

keep an eye on boats that haven't moved out of boat parks, and driveways all summer... now's a good time to make a silly offer!

advertise for small project boats, or whatever size considered.... in the local ad mart/trader type rag.

don't take on anything too big... unless you know you have the space to park it while you or another works on it....

price everything from glue to screws... then double it!

if you set a time period to get it done I.E 3 years... double it!

if you want it to be a hobby that promotes sobriety, and you consider you now drink your weekly allowance of alchoholic units..... double it! (i liked that bit actualy!, think i might have trebled it on occasions!)

while project boats are highly enjoyable to work on and eventually finish... there are many "unfinished projects" around... for very good reasons!

good luck. steve.

Not so big, but I bought a Norman Conquest (20') several years ago as a "project boat". Engine worked but the boat was otherwise a disaster area. The biggest issue was keeping up enthusiasm when doing the grotty jobs that don't have any obvious effect or make an obvious improvement.

A couple of things to try and get:

undercover work area. I had the boat on a trailer outside the house and was too weather dependant.

a firm idea of what the intended result of any task should look like, view complete similar boats if you can.

And yes, the advice re drinking is sound. Plus if you want the boat badly enough, after work in the evening and most of the weekend will be boat work time.
