Winter Lock closures

I know we can't really complain that the EA are spending money and keeping the locks in good order, but I'm stuck behind Benson lock for 5 months:( One day I dream of being able to go down to St Kats for Christmas, hasn't been possible in the last 10 ten years at least, one day maybe.

Never mind, when the River is transferred to a charity, you'll have no problem-

'cos there'll be no money to do any maintenance, so there'll be no closures.

'cept if the locks are broken........

Also have a look at this link http://www.visitthames.co.uk/uploads/Henley_Bridge_restriction_220811.pdf

Henley bridge central arch closed from 3rd October - that's scuppered my plans for a trip to St Kats in mid October - the other arches all too low.

Are you sure they are too low? We often wonder and I have enquired to find out their actual headroom as it doesn't seem to be published anywhere, I 've also asked if the date is still on schedule as we need to go through on the 8th and 9th.

Yes, headroom for the other arches would be useful although I am sure the radius of the others is less than the central and this will restrict width which will also be a problem for me.

On the subject of the arch heights at Henley Bridge (and others on the Thames), why do the EA not install height/clearance gauges as they do on the Norfolk Broads for example?

Perhaps this a question best asked in a new thread?

Doesn't matter where you ask the question, the answer is likely to be the same

That will cost and there isn't enough money in the pot (which is also getting smaller!).

The bridge heights are widely published.

All heights are taken from 'headwater' and as each lock generally runs a few inches above headwater , a phone call to the preceding lock to the bridge you are interested in is a good idea to work out the actual clearance.

Ah but Howard, here we are talking about the side arches at Henley specifically.

We got through Shillingford side arches last year when the centre arch was being worked on. The EA had actually checked the height and depth and advised boaters (or was it just me when I asked?).
