I want to leave my boat on the hard this winter in Sardinia, Alghero area or further north in the Gulf of Genoa. Alternatively Barcelona area might be a consideration.
Any advice or suggestions?

Portoferraio on Elba has two large yards with hards (both now owned by the same company) and is very popular for overwintering. Ferry and train to Pisa airport.

Several suitable yards in La Grande Rade de Toulon with easy cheap access via airports at Marseille or Nice or a TGV across France.

Port Napoleon near the mouth of the Rhone is excellent for laying up though subject to the Mistral in all its fury.

Barcelona is popular for lying afloat. Excellent social life in a cultural centre.

Any further information on Barcelone, would be appreciated, I intend to winter there this year, do you know off hand whether I can book? or should? Any info on anything interesting to a liveaboard on Barcelone would be appreciated, I've visted the city a few times, but not with the boat. Is security OK, to leave the boat when I'm away working. I hear a lot of people mention Barcelone, but I've not done too much research yet, apart from looking at their website.

I am afraid that I cannot tell you much more. I have spent a week in Barcelona but I have not overwintered there.

There are two places to stay - Port Vel, deep within the main harbour complex and fairly central to the city and Port Olympic just to the north of the city. Asking a Yachtie which they prefer is a bit like stopping someone in the street in Manchester or Liverpool and asking them which football team they support. You will get a definite answer from everyone, but not necesarily the same one! At the risk of alienating at least half of those who have stayed there, Port Vel is much more bustly and lively and great if you like noise and bustle and people. Port Olympic is quieter (some complain of a noisy disco there but we never heard it!) and more peaceful, but further from the centre. It all depends upon what you want.

Best wishes,

David.

Hi

I'm no expert on this, but it may be worth thinking of Aigues Mortes.

It has access to Med and Canal Rhone a Sete.

It is very sheltered, has all facilities, and is a favourite of wintering yachties.

How do I know ?

I have friends wintering there, and live nearby

Peter
