winter boating places to visit

Just go to Plymouth. Loads of places before and beyond. Though you may get a bit of snow on the roof. Bumble down to Fowey and Falmouth, then back to the Yelm, it is a Jem, back to Salcombe, it is the jewel in the crown.

Weymouth is about half way though you might want to visit Poole as well.

Sort of a leisurely jaunt if we went that way. Dartmouth and Teignmouth, were stars.

The 50 miles across the bay, could be a bummer, so some times we went round it. Fish and chips and a beer along the way could not be sneezed at

Yarmouth
Beaulieu river / Bucklers hard
Newtown creek

Christchurch is a great place to visit, HW slack +\- couple of hours to enter or leave, well bouyed in the summer months.

Poole harbour after that.

Hi there.

Lymington is good in the winter because like everywhere else numbers dwindle to a trickle meaning you'll be unlucky not to plonk it straight on the town quay. During the season you'd be about 10 boats out if you got there at all!

A pleasant walk into town and a number of good eateries including the pub straight on the quay, we've eaten in there quite a few times. Also youngster friendly.

As has been suggested Poole could be a first jaunt outside the Solent and the next target after that would be Weymouth. Poole is OK, bloody expensive to tie up at some of the marinas, Dolphin by the town quay not too bad but usually full during the season. Of late we've been anchoring up off the top of Brownsea Island and having a wander through the island.

Weymouth you will love. Something for everyone from arcades and fairground rides to historic forts. Doughnuts to fine dining and the local council spend a lot of money keeping the place looking good. If you do end up in Weymouth you will be able to berth for free in D&R's marina on a reciprocal deal with Haslar although strangely we always moor on the Town Quay and pay! Pop upstairs to the yacht club one night for a meal, good value and recently renovated.

Finally Yarmouth. Again quiet in the winter and they do cracking deals on mooring fees (unlike their somewhat misleading summer "£10 off" summer con). A good run down whilst still staying within the relative safety of the Solent.

Finally make sure you spend £30 a person (adult) and joint the Haslar yacht club. A social group, some cruises in company and a wealth of information. 50-50 mix of sail / motor. Google Haslar Yacht Club.

All the best

Henry :)

...
where is good to visit during winter?

What is the boat? Crusing speed? Are you comfortable in a BIG sea?

Outside the Solent this time of year the WIND can come up quickly and so can the sea so the boat is the main factor. Watch the forecast and decide.

The solent is good (but not as empty as it used to be :( ) this time of year. Newton usually has lots fo room to anchor, Yarmouth is good. Can yo uge into Keyhaven? Or try Poole/Weymouth.

Lots of places to visit in winter. In the Solent and beyond. In fact Monday Tuesday next week is looking good for FRANCE if the forecast holds.:) AND I'm out all next week........

Bembridge is good and not too far from Gosport, I reckon Duver marina will be a doddle in Winter and they have electrics (a must for me). Bembridge village is a good for food and St Helens.

BUT you need to check the tides 3 hours either side of HW.

If you are out there next week come over and say hello - we don't bite despite being a Sailboat ;). we will be around Solent/Weymouth I think.
