Not the Tornado - but I do have the 8800 (28' 10") Twin engine. Handles and goes very well and is properly put together - like all Windy's.

Anything in particular you need to know?

I am upgrading from a Sunseeker 24 Mexico and looking for a sports boat up to about 30 feet with 4 berths that is still fun and seaworthy.Windys look fantastic and are well built , the Tornado appears to have just what I'am looking for,but before taking the plunge I am trying to research them as much as possible.

Never heard anyone say a bad word about any Windy..the impression I'm always given is that they are fantastic boats, well built, and very seaworthy.

I have a 33 Mistral,

Nice boats handle the sea v well... have you considered the 9800? A mate of mine moved from a sun seeker, I think a 24ft Mexico, to the Windy, never looked back!

I have just bought a 31 Tornado and wondered if anyone knows how to retro fit the rear sunpad ?

As you've asked the question, I guess it's more involoved than just buying the sunpad? I suppose Berthon could do it for you, though i've not used them for this kind of work. I can reccommend Osmotech in Hamble, they can do pretty much anything GRP wise, and are good people to deal with in my experience.

On a recent quote they were about the same price, Nick.

Anyway, back to the 31. Re a sunpad, I would first try with just cushions on the floor and see if that works. I would have bought one some years ago but wifey hated the watersports area.At that time we also concluded the Scirocco 32 was more practical in sleeping area, as no1+2 would have coming along in those days.
In the end we never agreed any deals on the 32, so took a 28 meantime, which is a totally fab sportsboat. The size of the 31 will certainly make it more practical if you are doing more than Solent/Poole dayboating, though we did mange 3 weeks on the 28, somehow .Always had a soft spot for the 31. Pretty sure I saw one outside Ancastas Lymington office last week, but they tend to congregate around Poole and Lymington, and prices seem fairly set.
I think they look just great underway, but you dont get to see that from behind the helm ;)

Thank you for the replies on my Windy 31 Tornado sunpad. I have just bought her from Berthon and she is staying in Lymington Yacht Haven, where she has been lovingly looked after by the last owner for 10 years. She has the KAD44's with edc control and is a quick boat. I was looking at a newer 28 Ghibli (2002-04) but they were more money, bit too small in the cabin and no where near as quick with the single kad300. Most of the Tornados come without the rear sunpad, leaving this open space, which is great for fishing, watersports and engine access, but I would really like the sunpad and as this demand come from my better half, it has to be done !
I just don't know how best to fit the support, I guess it will be heavy so it needs to be more fixed and lift up with the engine hatch. I will post a few photos soon to see if anyone has any ideas. I am still waiting for Berthon to provide the orginal design details from Windy or find someone who has this option fitted from new.

Sorry, it was my first post and I could only reply to an old one, rather than start a new thread !

The photos show that the hinges are already in place at the rear and the pad would lie onto the grab bar at the front. I just do not know whether the support will be made of wood or grp, how it would be supported underneath to enable the engine hatch to be lifted without having to dismantle the whole system each time.

Any ideas or people you can recommend would be most welcome.

The male counterparts (on the sunbed) of the fittings you have on the boat are hinged.

The forward end of the sunbed is supported on a roller so the sun bed lifts in parallel to, and rolls back along, the engine hatch.

As you already have the female parts the biggest job is already done.

Have you not spoken to Berthon about this?

Thank you

I have now got more information from Berthon. They say that the sunbed is made from wood and as you say is hinged at the rear. They mention it will be lifted as the engine hatch rises and meets the forward part of the sunpad, which will be on rollers.
I still can not work it out in mind, how the sunpad gets structural support in the middle to stop it bowing under weight, unless there is a post on a runner, but then the sunpad and engine hatch will lift together in parrallel.

Rob

The sunbed is a one piece upholstered assembly around 150mm deep with a plywood base, as shown in previously posted pictures, so is stiff enough not to need support in the middle.

From memory, when in position, it rests on the handrail on the forward moulding, but I'm sure that the forward end of the factory sunbed has a rail and roller to enable the sunbed to lift in parallel to the engine hatch - although I stand to be corrected as this wasn't a popular accessory.

I suggest if you want the sunbed it would be best to order the standard factory part from Windy through Berthon. It would be feasible to fabricate an aftermarket version but I doubt it would work out much cheaper by the time you have got someone to work out what to do.

As you have the brackets already fitted the factory sunbed should just slot in.

Dan
