Windlass winds in, but not out

Apologies for the lack of visuals as I cannot get the illustrations in the Sunseeker manual to show very clearly.

However the instructions are as follows:

1. Ensure chain is locked in place using chain stopper or retaining strop.

2. Insert winch handle into centre of winch top nut and unwind in an anti-clockwise direction. Then remove top nut and washer.

3. Lift Rope Drum off the spline and put drum and top nut to one side.

4. Insert adaptor over the spline, line up lug on the bottom of the adaptor with the locating hole on the top of the gypsy and screw down using central dog on the top of the adaptor. (The adaptor has a distance piece the same length as the original drum.)

5. Use winch handle to screw down adaptor central dog.

6. Insert winch handle into adaptor BASE and rotate clockwise to draw in anchor rode.

If anyone is is Cala d'Or at any time send me a PM and and you can see the device in action.

AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Makes perfect sense, though can't look anything like the pic in the lewmar catalogue. Thanks Doug

Aaaaaahhhhhhaaa Aaaaahhhhhhaaaa

Brilliant

I'll give Aquafax a call now and see what the delivery/price is for a V.5 kit.

I owe you a beer - we are planning a few weeks in Mallorca this autumn - probably cross from Sant Carles during early Sept so maybe we can meet.

I was also thinking of leaving the boat in Mallorca for a week or two - maybe during last week of Sept/first week of Oct whilst I fly home. Then back in Oct for a couple of weeks before heading home to Sant Carles. Do you know anyone with a cheap 20m berth for a couple of weeks? It would be after the summer season has finished - best time IMO.

Hi Mike,

We should be on the boat around that period so would be nice to meet up.

Sorry cannot help with the mooring but Cala d'Or Marina is suffering the same lack of berth take up as elsewhere and I know that Yann the owner is prepared to talk turkey for any short term or winter mooring.

I would speak to him myself but I think you would get a better deal by going direct yourself.

Cala d'Or is a very safe marina weather wise and has security personnel that patrol all night hours.

A rather belated update on this: the stainless steel gypsy stripper ring was delivered in the nick of time, just before we went down to the SoF for the jubilee week. It only took a couple of mins to fit it to the windlass, and over the 10 or so occasions that we've anchored since then, the problem of the chain jamming in the windlass itself has not recurred. So it seems that the cracked plastic stripper ring had some culpability after all. (I took the new part down in my hand luggage, which made for an amusing conversation with the chap at security at Gatwick: so, this 'gypsy stripper ring', what exactly it is for again, sir?)

Cheers
Jimmy

A couple of years ago, we took one of those "twist" anchor swivels out in our hand luggage. The security officer let it through. He was confused that it might have been a cosh but it looked more like a dildo!!!

It s a bit late , but in the interest of completeness

What confuses me is how it's possible to turn the gipsy with any kind of attachment. The shaft is connected to the motor/gearbox so I just cant see how DougH's manual attachment works.

Any ideas?

You havent dismantled far enough.
under the brass bit is the ratchet I have been trying to explain.

see my photo of what appears to be fastened to motor but it isnt, see second photo and note two ratchet pins.

these need light oil every two years or they stick preventing manual recovery.

the windlass should sound like a swiss watch ticking or these need light oil.

So all the energy from the windlass motor is driving through that single wrachet pin to the gypsy in normal use? Or have I misunderstood the piccy?

Yes, all the windlass energy is transferred through the pin (two).

Also the whole shank (picy 1) should pop up and down with your hand pressure assuming it is well maintained, there is a heavy duty spring and top locking cone in picy 2 on the top.

when put together and maintained you can

0) wind the chain up without moving the motor and the chain stops when you stop on the ratchet.

1) undo the centre nut which lets the chain fall freely and use the top part as a rope windlass .

2), carry on tightening the centre nut and the whole centre brass bit should lift up, this disengages the ratchet but I cant think of many uses for this feature ????? allows manual deployment without free fall perhaps or allows rope windlass to be used either direction.

In my case, yes , just put handle in offset hole and turn, the windlass turns and clicks without turning the motor.
if you look at my photo with the snake/eel , the snake was half in the second off set hole.

in your case you only have the centre hole so need a kit (see hundred odd posts above) I suspect that a small tie bar the size of half a lolly pop stick held with two self tappers/machine screws to bridge the gap between the centre cap and the rope drum would work well, there isnt a lot of pressure on this, it would just need to stop the centre hole tightening too much .
