Manual Overide Kit on page 26 for all V series winches.

As I read it, those are for gypsy only winches. I believe (but happy to be corrected) that if you have the capstan+gypsy version of the winch you dont need this stuff

It only winds one way with the handle - and that loosens the clutch.

Years ago we were on TCM's Leopard when it was 3 weeks old and the anchor winch failed (blooody IT boats Mapis... ). The anchor was mebbe 50-60kg, i can't remember. We got it up by diving down with a line and clipping a snap shackle on the chain, mebbe 6m underwater. Then we hauled in the line with the stern capstans, taking the line over a bow roller or fairlead and running it all down the side deck. This made 6m of chain slack, so we could haul that by hand, then we repeated the process about 3 times. This was quite a shagarama, and we had all drunk lots of wine all afternoon, but it worked

Think I know what is confusing you.

The item pictured to the immediate right of the catalogue numbers is for the gypsy version only.

The item in question is on the same line on the extreme right hand side.

The picture is not a good illustration but Lewmar will sent a drawing on request.

I hadn't thought of using the stern winches and that idea of using a line sounds good - I have a spare chain hook so (with care) this idea might be a good backup. Though, I'm not sure that SWMBO will be very impressed running from stern to bow and back each pull!!!

Part 66840005 is a V4/5 Gypsy Drum emergency manual recovery kit
When I get back in a couple of weeks I'm going to ask Lewmar what that part is.
Might get a more favourable answer this time.

Just got back home (for a couple of weeks anyway).
Before I call Lewmar I was wondering how the kit that DougH uses works.

Apologies for the dirty parts - the pics were taken before it was cleaned.

Here are some pics of my winch - it's dead easy to break it down like this and with a little care you could keep the chain locked off.

What confuses me is how it's possible to turn the gipsy with any kind of attachment. The shaft is connected to the motor/gearbox so I just cant see how DougH's manual attachment works.

Any ideas?

I ordered the new stainless steel stripper ring a couple of weeks ago; Aquafax did say that it wasn't in stock and would be slow. I contacted them again at the end of last week for a progress update and they said 'still on back order'.

This morning the phone rang and it was them telling me that it was in. I've asked them to send it on a next-day so that I can take it with me when head down to the boat on Friday. So all things being equal I should have it fitted on the weekend. I'll report back then.

Doesn't the manual conversion kit replace the central nut that acts as the clutch? My guess would be that you have to release the clutch from the shaft to the gypsy - and this new replacement assembly is fixed through some mechanism to the gypsy to allow you to turn it without turning the shaft. All guesswork though.

Yep, I was only guessing. The pic of the manual conversion kit does appear to have two different locations for the winch to be fitted though, and my guess is that one is for the clutch function, and the other for manual recovery.

We need DougH to come along and give us the facts!

Ditto. I don't get it either. I can see how a replacement capstan without splines would do it, if squeezed hard onto the cone clutch yet still free to turn (=mission impossible), but that's not what the gadget does
