Hi I first visited this site in February looking for info on getting a boat and then other things since then with some help I have a 32 ft boat and sail from Shotley after replacing many things I now need a windlass where do I go and what do I get please?

Do you want to buy and fit yourself or have one installed? Do you want manual or electric? Some decisions needed.

If you want electric, it's important to get the electrical supply man enough to deliver the rated power of the windlass. This will require fat cables (think starter motor or bigger) from your existing battery or, better still, an extra battery somewhere up forward. If you're not familiar with marine electrics, better to use a professional.

The windlass itself needs to be securely mounted to a strong point on the foredeck. Doing that work yourself will save on the installation costs, but the electrics are the bigger part of installation.

To research what windlasses are available, see something like Seamark Nunn website - you can then go and visit them in Trimley (Felixstowe) to see the stuff for real.

Peter.

If you are based out of Shotley have a word with Paul at Rainbow Marine who works out of Shotley, his yacht is based there - he will give you sound advice.
