I have a Beneteau 473 which is fitted with a Leroy Somer windlass. Does anyone know whether this type of windlass requires any kind of annual maintenance? I have contacted the manufactures but they don't know either!

I am probably showing my ignorance here but I did not know Leroy Somer made windlasses - They DO make electrical bit and bobs such as DC motors complete with gearboxes, alternators AC motors etc, etc for building into other equipment.

Are you sure the windlass is Leroy Somer or is that the name on the motor?

I find it strange that an equipment manufacturer cannot tell you about maintenance requirements unless they only supplied components i.e. the motor and not the whole windlass.

Did you not receive a manual for the windlass?. Even if you bought second hand the Beneteau 473 has only been around for around 4 years (2000 first one?) as far as I know so I would expect the manual to still be on-board or among the papers.

Thanks for that.

The only name I can find on the windlass is Leroy Somer but there is nothing about it in any of the boat manuals. Maybe I should try the dealer again.

Cheers

If there was a littlermore info in your Bio, such as location, maybe some of the erudite authorities local to you could have a look and say " ah yes it is one of those"

In the meantime try looking through some of the catalogues and see if you can identify the windlass or go back to the supplier.

Is the windlass original equipment? or an add on? if original equipment contact Beneteau with the hull number and ask them what they fitted.

Re: Leroy Somer wndlass Maintenance?

It does appear as though they do make windlasses although I must admit I had never heard of them. Some details are on their web site here. Click on ‘Worldwide network’ to find two UK agents or click on ‘Products’ and enter ‘windlass’ in the search box to find a press release dated 30/10/03 on their windlasses.

It may be worth trying the UK addresses for information if you have only spoken to their head office although it sounds as though you may have already spoken to them (in which case try head office!).

Good luck.

I think the answer is yes! Mine (also on a Ben), has just started seizing up every time I try to use it. I had to get the WD40 out on the last three occasions. An asbestos like gasket is now breaking up and I guess that salt water has caused this. I'm keeping it fed with oil till I can take it to bits.
