So the refit list continues to grow.
We've decided to swap from our current knackered 12mm chain down to 3/8".
I already have the smaller gypsy and clutch cones. But I can't get the existing inner cone off the windlass.

How much heat should I apply?
Should I buy a gear puller? Will a 2-leg work or ought I go for the more expensive 3-leg?

I can get a gear puller from Amazon quite cheaply, but it would be nice to get a recommendation for one that will do the job.
In particular, I'm concerned that if the claws are too chunky, they won't be able to slip in to the narrow gap between the cone and the windlass body.
 
Have you tried penetrating oil and a bit of banging with a soft mallet?

You can also heat up the gypsy with a torch. Or the cone - that would probably work also.

I don't know what the Lofrans looks like but on my Lewmar there is certainly no room to get puller claws between the cone and the gypsy.

Can you take the whole gypsy off together with the cone? That might make the job easier.

It appears from this diagram that pressing/tapping the threaded end of the shaft should release the inner cone. Obviously needs care not to damage the threads. Maybe put a nut on first? Perhaps safer to detach the motor before trying.
 
Not the same model, but on my Lofrans windlass the trick was to exert a symmetrical force. I used to do it with a pair of screwdrivers from below but I dare say there is a more sophisticated solution.
 
Thanks all. I'm currently covered head to toe in dust from sanding the bottom of the boat but I will take a look at the windlass later.
