Hi all, after the advice I got last year on anchors I thougth wold come back for more this year.

Questions I have are.

What type of winlass for a 27foot bayliner? has to take chain and rope, wont be used much but bad back makes recovery an issue.

Type of anchor? was thinking of CQR or Delta, did look at sword ones online but cant find a seller.

8mm or 6mm chain? avarage water depth will be about 15 to 30ft so was thinking 20 meters chain 40 meters rope?.

Thanks for reading and welcome any help that can be given on this.

Also feel free to mention where I might be able to obtain all of the above.

The main criteria here is the bad back in my opinion.

With a mixture of chain and rope, the difficult part for you is switching from the rope to the chain on the windlass.

In the past I have had a securing clip on the foredeck so that I can clip the chain to it and the weight is taken before I switch from rope to chain into the gypsy.

That way you dont have to carry the weight of the chain whilst you fiddle around.

I think you would get away with 30 feet of chain on your boat. With 60 feet of chain you wont anchor in 30 feet of water if there is any tide at all, so you might as well reduce the weight load and have more rope and less chain.

I have a heavier boat than yours with similar windage. We use 30 feet of 8mm chain and a small javelin anchor, plus lots of rope. Works fine so far.

I dont have a bad back and can very easily recover the chain by hand at the end when the windlass has done the hard work on the rope.

Sorry - I cant give any clues as to where you can get this stuff up in Glasgow. (Mind you I do have about 200 metres of chain in my garage!)

No particular recommendations, but you will be looking at a vertical capstan (not a windlass) with a rope/chain gypsy. Just compare the options from the various manufacturers.

Well not CQR, Delta is okay, although my opinion should be obvious. I will direct you to the recently published test in Motor Boats Monthly (14 anchors compared) - on our website under "independent reviews". Whatever you do don't skimp if the anchor is important to you, you get what you pay for and there's a lot of junk out there.

Rather than answer this in detail I will direct you to my little article done recently: Chain, Rope, and Catenary, Anchor systems for small boats - take 10 mins to look over that.

Thanks for those links made intresting reading,
Jez,
What type of type of gypsy did you have? as that sounds exactly the type im looking for.

Is it common to not have a deck hatch to the anchor locker as all I’ve got is a 2 & half inch hole to feed the line into, access if via the cabin, sorry for stupid question
