Wind speed indicator

My Clipper wind speed is giving direction but not the speed. The cups are going round all connections appear OK

Any ideas what can be wrong or what to do????

Rotation detected by magnets on the cups assembly ???....Like with a log impeller. ........ Magnets missing ????

Thanks for the input Vic. I think that will probably be correct as we had a hurricane force gale through here while we were away. I will be going up the mast to check it out.

Thank you

I replaced my cups last weekend after 6 years (£12.50) , simple enough job as long as you do not drop the tiny nut, if you have a lock washer type don't over push it on, and you do need to get the washers on the right way round.

'IF' your nut has come off, the cups will still rotate but maybe missing the magnet contact ?

I believe its the same head unit as the old Target wind indicator in which case the magnet is a complete ring so don't see that you could have lost it.

As Caer Urfa suggests, the wind cups may have come loose so the magnet is too far away from the Hall effect sensors. As Caladh says it may be a bad connection at deck level (or elsewhere). After hurricane force winds, if any of the downlead was able to move about it could be a broken wire anywhere in its length. The innards of the head unit are very simple - no special parts, so any savvy electronics person should be able to check it for you. I did once draw a schematic of the head unit circuit but not sure where it is now. I've been told Nasa are very reasonable about repairs if its returned to them. Of course all this supposes the fault to be in the head unit at all...

If the washer has slipped or the pin has dropped then the cup rotor may have dropped too far below the magnets.

I think this is what has happened. As it was not so long agao that the direction indicator was not working. Up I went and scraped out some gunge and then it worked. However I now believe the GUNGE was in fact a black ring (do not know the name) which was supposed to be there! Any way will go up after the wind drops to investigate.
