Has anybody any experience of NASA Clipper wind instruments? The rest of the kit onboard is Raymarine ST60 but I simply can't afford their version.

Hi jacs,

I fitted one (Nasa) for a friend of mine in Spain and I'm sorry to say I thought it absolutely dreadful, with a poor quality display and cheap plasticy quality. He had trouble with the masthead transducer within a few months, though that may have been just bad luck with his particular unit.

I agree with Davidwf, I'd definitely try to get ST60 (or similar quality units) otherwise I believe you are going to be awfully disappointed.

Hope this helps.

Jerry

Don't touch the NASA wind with a 20ft bargepole. The quality of the masthead unit is worse than a childs lucky bag toy.It will be lucky to last a season before the cups disintigrate. The rest of the NASA range is cheap ,cheerful and ok.

you really need a wind instrument tthat can access the log speed, in orderr to get true wind speed and VMG (both very useful) thus as I suspect that most manufacturers equipment would not accept the output of anyone elses , you are probably stuck with that well known piece of equipment that loves the wet environment /forums/images/icons/smile.gif (i.e. raymarine)

I have had the same experience with the masthead unit. The shaft the cups are fixed to has a flattened end which is moulded into the "works". Mine has become "unmoulded" after only a year, and the cups have dropped off. I propose to strick them back with superglue. Has anybody else had this problem? and if so, how did they fix it?

My previous boat had a Nasa wind instrument. After 9 months from new a cup disappeared from the transducer. Nasa would not admit that there was anything wrong with it and would not honour the guarantee. The new set of cups I was forced to buy was the last item that I will ever buy from them. Cheap, but not worth it.

My 4 year old ST60 system has not required any repairs yet.

My shaft was snapped off (ouch!)

I got a new one from NASA (free of charge), drilled a hole right through and araldited the new shaft in place.

No-one was more surprised than me when I put the mast back up and it worked!

I followed your example and superglued mine. Mine is on the roof of my house. I put rubber bands round it to hold it still, whilst the glue set. Now I have got to wait until the rubber bands perish - then I can tell you if superglue works
