Wind gen\'s & Marina Etiquette

Hi all

Do you think it would be reasonable to ask my new neighbour to lock of his wind gen' when berthed? Its quite large, when windy makes a noise like a constant pressure washer, drives the dog mad and, as the 'windmill' itself leans out slightly from his stern quarter it almost hangs over our cockpit; so much so that it very nearly caught my sons head as we left our berth last week (he was standing at our bow looking the other way as I made the turn)

I don't want to sour relations with the owner - he only took up the berth this season - but then I'm also not keen to scrape the crew's brains off the deck! I haven't seen the owner for about a month and am tempted to take it up with the marina - what do you reckon?

Cheers

Mark

A friendly chat would be the best approach. Starting with the formal approach can get peoples backs up.

Of course if the friendly chat fails a hacksaw can work wonders!

Being a Wind Gen user but not in a marina, I would say that you can ask but be prepared for a short reply!
Maybe your dog drives him mad!
"nearly caught my sons head as we left our berth last week (he was standing at our bow looking the other way)"
Exceptionally tall son? As the boat owner will have to live with it's position, and I doubt that he would mount it in a position that would endanger him or his crew.
The received wisdom on tethering wind gens is that it is bad for their bearings.
Console yourself that they may only be noisy in high winds, and from what I have seen of marinas, when the wind is high there are lots of other things rattling and clanking.

Re: Wind gen\'s & Marina Etiquette

The point is that the gen' leans outboard of the other boat, hence being so close to ours. My son is about 5'6", the windmill is about 6' above his stern so when we turn, the swing of our bow, combined with the sheer brings the spinning blades very close indeed to the head of whoever might be standing at our bow.

This reply depends on the ludicrous assertion that the original poster must necessarily also cause a nuisance to others, something which I doubt and for which no evidence is given. While it is sensible to have a wind-generator running at a swinging mooring, to have on running at a marina, where power is available from the shore, is just selfish and inconsiderate.

Re: Wind gen\'s & Marina Etiquette

I agree wholeheartedly with Kermudjon, unfortunately, it's also a very common level of behaviour.

Re: Wind gen\'s & Marina Etiquette

I'm sure it wouldn't take much for a bit of elastic looped around 1 blade and the support post ... shouldn't upset the bearings either ...

Re: Wind gen\'s & Marina Etiquette

Ah! Insult my dog, you insult me!
"OP must necessarily also cause a nuisance"
I believe I said may and not OP but his dog.
I don't disagree that a WG on a marina is unnecessary, but if you accept that tethering is detrimental, what else is he to do, remove it?

Re: Wind gen\'s & Marina Etiquette

Fact, everybody loves my dog. If they don't they get partially eaten alive and then fed into a nearby wind generator!

Sounds like a good reason to fit a wind generator. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, he also has two 'picnic table' size solar panels and is always plugged into the shore power... Its like being berthed next to Sellafield!

Not if you don't like dogs - they tend to make themselves a little more apparent when 'mad'.

I'm puzzled why it is detrimental to tether a wind genny. Surely spinning 24/7 is more likely to damage bearings.

Re: Wind gen\'s & Marina Etiquette

I could have used the phrase "might also" but the habit of accusing an injured party of supposed transgressions has become rather common, as with some of the MOBO vs raggie arguments, leading me to put in a word of support for the poster, for which I make no apology. I have no opinions about dogs in general.
