on Loch Lomond last Saturday left me nervous. I was practicing coming along portside the Jetty and every time I went to the outboard to change into neutral and came back to the wheel I started drifting to starboard. I'm just starting out and couldn't believe how much the wind affected my course in such little time. Eventually used boat hook to grab a cleat the my full strength to pull boat in (Shetland 535) to the side. At least the Patrol Rangers kept an eye on me.

Yes, I know the feeling.
We were out on the Loch on monday, It was blowing a Hooley, usually we would stay in the marina, but we were meeting a friend for lunch at Inveruglas. So we went out, the boat managed fine, but it was Very interesting when we were coming back into berth at the marina. We took our time, and all was well.

Maybe a bit more ballast would have helped James, you now like interior lining, mattresses, seat covers that sort of thing?

Why not put a warp ashore when still in gear and then select neutral, this will give you far more control, or even better arrange to have a gear control at the helm.

What o/b do you have on your 535 and what type of steering? I know a bit about these having re-engined one and replaced the steering gear, nav lights etc.

A Yamaha 30hp electric. I have remote steering and throttle and gear levers but the thread on the cable has been snapped (before I had it) and may have only 2 turns at most into the female part in the gear lever it's self. There is also a electric start cable with a male 5 or 6 pin connection but at £250+ for the cable and key start etc.. its too much money. I have cruising lights to put onto the boat but have no wiring yet.

I have to firstly make 2 new sides for the canopy, then re-seal the port side windows then think about interior lining (thanks to Roy for info) then... then.. then.. ooh!
