Winch repairs

The winch drums are loose on the shafts, I was thinking of machining the drums out and inserting a bush. I'm not sure of what material to use for the bush, Brass or nylon
Or are their any better ideas?

You do not say which winches you have which could make a difference. If they are Lewmars I would suggest you look at replacing the roller bearings which do wear and can cause the drums to move about a bit, but I do not know if this is true of other makes. The strain loadings on winches are very high and I personally would hesitate to use plastic or nylon and I would also want to be sure that the drums will still be servicable after some metal has been machined out.
