I just loved this set, spotted last Sunday, but are they really any use for protecting winches?

(Oh, and does anyone have the knitting pattern?)

Cannot see any purpose in knitted covers.
In Australia they use simular covers made from canvas, vinyl etc, this helps to keep the sun off and prevents the grease inside from melting and running out, I suppose it also helps in keeping the rain out.

It gave me a laugh, thanks for the pic. Personally I think the vinyl covered ones are good as they tend to protect parts during the winter. My new windlass would look very grubby quite soon if just left to the elements as its stoved white. The first sea boat I had I left on its mooring the first winter and it suffered really badly from the weather. Being an inland cruiser previously had not prepared me for the difference in climatic damage on the coast. I now take my boat out every year and have started to cover certain parts for added protection and remove the mast even though it's only for the comm's. Ashore does seem to be the best place in winter.
