I have a pair of Barient 32 STs [ USA built ] as my primaries. I think they will be original to the boat which will make them 36 years old. They are working well and generally are in good oreder.

But where the bronze? spindle base is bolted with stainless ? bolts to the cast aluminium base I am getting corrosion on one of the bases. The corrosion is just adjacent to the bolts. It is more serious adjacent to the outer most bolt which I would guess is the one that will be wettest over time. Some of the base is actually crumbling away but only the top lip. I think the actual base still has plenty meat and I am hoping the threads are OK.

What can I do to stop the corrosion now. I am thinking some epoxy filler and paint after wire brushing.

What can I do to prevent it in the future. I am thinking reassembly with a copper based anti seize coating.

I believe cooper and Ali do not like each other in terms of electrical corrosion, so may be duralac or epoxy paint the base.

I have to say that it doesn't look like bronze in your photo, seems to be ferrous of some sort. However, if it has only gone that bad in 36 years I don't think I would worry very much. I would abrade it rather than wire brush, then a coat of paint or Waxoyl.

Definitely not ferrous, scuffs up bronze looking and no rust so I would guess bronze or gunmetal.
