Win 10 upgrade

I did manage to clone the HDD in my pristine, unsullied W7 Sami Notebook, mount the Crucial SSD inside ( together with max'd-out RAM  ), and the blerry thing worked. Justlikethat!

But I'm tempted to leave well alone, now. 'If ain't broke, don't fix it...'

Now, my desktop Dell 7010 SFF job already runs Win 10, and is bang-up-to-date, I'm led to believe. All cock-a-hoop at the previous 'success', I've got me a big fat Crucial MX500 500 Gb thingy, and I'm looking to finagle that inside some day soon..... with double the RAM, too.
I found copies of the machine's Manuals - User and Tech - and it seems that although there are far more capable CPU/GPU kits around now, there's a lot more capability in the machine than I'd suspected. So I'll be exploring some more of it....

Thanks for the encouragement, above.

I have usually split the SSD in last few rebuilds to have a system and a data partition. Much easier.to recover the OS if a problem develops. I also made Win 7 and Win10 images when upgrades were free. I kept Win7 on one laptop for ages and only recently put the Win10 image on again. I was able to do a complete update to a fresh copy of latest Win10. No problems with licence as Win10 had been activated on the original image for.that laptop.

I know that Win7 to Win10 free.upgrade was still working near end of 2019 but thought it was expected to stop working before 2020 started.

A number of 'industry sources' advise that this is available UNTIL January 14.
E&OE...

I can confirm the upgrade is still free having done my PC this week. But only in order to get the security updates as it is normally connected to the internet. W7 is fine for anything that is only occasionally connected in my view. Win 10 seems more clumsy and to spend a lot of time playing with itself, and I Have been trying a USB Linux MInt alternative. At present its winning hands down over Win 10 which feels crude and clunky by comparison.

Seems to me MS fixed something that was not bust changing from 7, and have lost the plot!

As far as I was concerned Win 7 was fine but I only use a desktop. Someone who was using a desktop at home and wanted to access files on their iPad or phone when at work there could be problems. Years ago I got around that by sending my resume to myself so I could access it from my Yahoo mail account using my work computer.

With Win 10 they want everything to go on cloud storage (e.g. Onedrive) and you can bet they will charge us for that a little time down the track .

Thanks for your thoughts on Linux.

I have just had to have the hard drive replaced on my Dell desktop. Totally frozen and wouldn't start.
This has caused me a deal of trouble and have had to rebuild my Favourites list which I carefully developed, this apparently was
corrupt and therefore didn't transfer. Also have to re-enter all my passwords.
My technician described it as 'Logical Failure' as opposed to mechanical failure. This was caused, in his opinion, to
endless 'upgrades'. I'm sure he said there were two a week on average and they cant be turned off.
Certainly didn't know this was the future when I originally bought into the Microsoft dream.

Sitting on a ship doing ship to ship ... the company Notebook had Win 10 and Office 357 on it.

Not only did the computer have slow days - it even started to refuse to start Office programs because it could not access Internet.

First thing done was to revert office to 2013 version to get rid of that daft internet requirement.

Win 10 - generally I like - BUT if only it didn't keep slowing down so often as it looked for updates ! I am working and then it gets slower and slower ... when I shut it down - it then tells me its updating. No wonder it took 10x longer to do that job !! Maybe that's why its called win 10 ... 10x slower ?

If you want to stop Win10 updating then set your network connection to 'metered'. It does respect this and I successfully kept updates at bay for almost 2 years using this method (I had a reason to do so).
Having now let it update to 1903 I don't have any issues with it, it seems fine. Once you take the 2 essential steps of disabling Windows Search/Indexing and Superfetch (now named Sysmain in this version) of course, processes which will otherwise use every available resource.

Microsoft won't support Windows 7 until Jan. 14, and some wonder if it will still offer a free upgrade after that date, just like Windows Media Creation Tool.
Download Windows Media Creation Tool - free - latest version
There are also a number of so-called free upgrades available on Google, which is how I got my Windows 10.

One thing, if we upgrade the way Microsoft does, Microsoft won't be responsible for any failure.

You've described precisely my problems.

Sometimes my internet is slow (because they are still building the network) but I hadn't linked that to the problems of Office being totally unresponsive. When I first boot up it is quite good but gradually slows down. I try to log off but even that is a real problem. Through sheer frustration I switch the damned computer off and log on again.

I rue the day I ditched Win 7

Why on earth would you do that? I find W10 very hard to understand whereas W7 is intuititive. If i could install it on my laptop, I would.
... because MS say it is better. Its not! But without Security updates, W7 will become increasingly vulnerable to attackers. They say. Or is that a sales pitch too?

I agree. I havea W10 laptop, which i rarely use because Win 10 regualrly locks up while it does things to itself, even with SteveN's solution in place!

Linux is going to be the winner in this one. MS have really screwed up, trying to stuff in too much technology that few of us actually need!

Apparently Google uses a version of Linux called Goobuntu

Can anyone tell me if I get Linux on a USB stick can I
  • access all my online files (documents/pictures) using Linux
  • access all websites like Yahoo, YBW Forums, Facebook etc
  • Move/copy files
while Windows 10 is still loaded?

I'm not surprised MS was giving Win 10 away.

The problem stems from MS deciding that everyone sits at a desk with Gb internet connection. So Office is stripped to basic for installation and then as you work with it and require another function or addition - it downloads that from internet while supposedly allowing you to continue uninterrupted.

One particular day - the Company computer just fell into a deep sleep ... luckily I carry my own as well ... and day before I had transferred data from company one to mine ... I did it each few days just in case. For the next two weeks I had to use my computer because it took all that time for the Office 357 to repair itself and download the functions required. The vessel was 15miles offshore ... and as she swung to anchor - my cabin would change orientation to the shore GSM antenna ....

Needlass to say no-one in my companys use 357 now ... we are fully prepared for end of updates to our stand-alone installations.

This is the answer I was looking for.

Windows 10 isn't the only (kind of) free operating system you can install on your computer. Linux can run from just a USB drive without modifying your existing system, but you'll want to install it on your PC if you plan on using it regularly.Aug 3, 2015 (PC World)

Obviously Microsoft decided they'd have to give Windows 10 away or go belly up

Well, never had a problem with Win10, can't really tell the difference anymore between it and W7. Go into metering to stop the auto updates. Otherwise it just works.
Where do I find this "metering" setting, please?

It's in settings/windows update/ advanced options.
