Whatever their uses 4x4s have no place in city centres.
 
There is also the small matter of mounting what I believe are called cow bars on the front of these things. Apparently hitting somone with these is much more damaging then hitting them with a bumper/bonnet combination. Why would anyone want to do that?

When I point out that our last car (Rav4) was economical and small and our CRV is just as economical and small (compared to a Volvo/Mondeo/Merc etc) they fall back to "I don't mean ones like that".
If they're going to categorize by the number of driven wheels, then the logic is a bit squiffy.
OK. my Cherokee used to do a miserable 16 mpg, but it's footprint was smaller than a Ford Orion (remember them?).
I don't think the Twickenham Moaners are actually concerned about how much fuel you have to buy to run one. They're just annoyed that people park all over the shop outside Tarquin's school. But if the glitterati had Smart's or Kia's they'd still abandon their cars as near the shool gates as possible.

People Carriers are enormous, difficult to drive, thirsty and usually half empty so why aren't there Ban the MPV web sites?

We have had two petrol C-RVs and just waiting now for a new Santa Fe diesel. Both are shorter than our previous non 4x4 cars (Honda Accord Aerodecks, estates). The C-RV especially has an excellent pedestrian crash rating so that beef is a non starter, the Santa Fe doesn't have one yet. Our kids are long out of school and I work from home, so our Chelsea tractor doesn't stop outside schools. The Santa Fe diesel will use less fuel than the C-RVs which aren't thirsty either, but then I don't drive huge mileages anyway. Both the C-RV and the Santa Fe are actually 2 wheel drive under normal conditions, 4 wheel drive only engages when needed, not that that should make any difference as folks drive 'acceptable' cars like Audis that have 4WD.

All this anti 4WD is just reverse snobbery claptrap IMO, now being taken up as an excuse for increased taxes by Gordon F Bennett too. This is a bit like the cost for a marina berth or even a mooring, a 25 footer takes up the berth just the same as a 40 footer and a 4x4 takes one parking spot the same as a Mondeo.

I chose a C-RV initially because Honda withdrew the Accord Aerodeck and didn't yet have a replacement estate car. I grew to like the sit upright driving position and better view and now with a few stiff bits find normal cars very uncomfortable, so we bought another next time round and are doing it again now. That is my choice and the Ku Klux Khan snobs can shove their prejudices up their twin exhausts. Rant over, for now.
 
Sailing afflatus is with us already!

The sailing 4 x 4 is the Average White Boat - be it a Beneteau, a Jeanneau, a Bavaria or a Legend or some other make.

These boats are far bigger than their predecessors were - yesterday's 26 footer or 32 footer is today's 40 footer - much beamier, crammed with all sorts of mod. cons like showers, fridges, etc and with much gadgetry aimed at making sailing "easier" like in mast reefing, etc.

The result is that there is simply less room on the water than there used to be.

This is starting to get onto dangerous ground. If 4x4's have no place in city centres, where does that leave the use of pleasure boats in some of the worlds most busy commercial waterways (Portsmouth Harbour, Southampton Water etc)??

You are wrong in my case because it is the 1st time I have ever commented on the sanctimonious crap being aired about 4x4s but enough is enough.

If you want to have less congestion, let's ban all trucks, vans, motorhomes and especially caravans. Kids should be banned too or limited Chinese style to one per couple, that way the population would shrink, need less cars and not need to make school runs. Why not only allow one car per family too, not 2 or even
more.

Whatever happened to the concept of freedom of choice.

Maybe freedom of choice needs to be curtailed a tad, when the choice is to selfishly [--word removed--] up the planet?

Whatever happened to the school bus, or bikes for older kids? Of course the problem with bikes is there are too many cars arriving and leaving the school for bikes to be safe /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

And what do all the brown-ricers do. Isn't the anti 4x4 lobby a protest?
I don't have to justify my choice of vehicle to anybody.
The cars I run have all been legally available in the UK.

It's just a whinge by the bleeding hearts, who also dislike the SLKs,M4s and Boxters left blocking the roads outside the schools.

WAKE UP. It's the tosspots driving the vehicles that are at fault.

Well, I drive my Mondeo up the A12 every day and twice in the past year some tosspot driving a 4x4 has blocked the road for a couple of hours in the morning rush by standing the thing on its roof, trying to change lanes at a speed that a vehicle with agricultural suspension and a high centre of gravity should not be attempting, so I don't like them.

And they do take more space in a car park. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I assume you drive a car. I would bet money that you use more fuel pa than I do because I work from home, live 5 minutes from my boat and drive well below average miles each year. We also only run just the one car but if I chose for this to be a 4x4 so what?

I drive 32,000 miles a year.

One school age kid walks to school with his mother, the other one cycles to his.

More people = less freedom of choice. Would have thought that was obvious!

The thread actually started with "Taking a 2 year old to school in a small tank does not seem like a good use of resources, will the marine world follow suit?" Since you don't have any kids I guess it doesn't apply to you.

If being aware of the effect of my actions on other people is sanctimonious then pass me the dog collar!
 
So that's about 1000 hours behind the wheel. probably more.

You don't like them because they've added a total of 4 hours to your travel.

I expect motorcyclists, car drivers, van drivers and wagon drivers have also slowed down your progress. None of them, presumably, judged their vehicles' capabilities very well either.

I still don't see why the number of driven wheels is a way to categorise poor drivers.
