Never had cause to go around the Island - is it worth the trip or are my fears founded that this is the edge of the world and that I may simply drop off ?

I can't really find anywhere to explore on the charts...but am I missing something?

It's really quite a nice trip, with some very pleasant views. You can stop off enroute at places like White Cliff Bay, and Freshwater Bay (both very pleasant in the summer when the suns out, and also the new haven at Ventnor.

Forgot the other good bit. There's an overfalls at St Catherines point,so you can go there to play in the lumpy stuff if it's boringly flat everywhere else - though most people seem to plan to go through on slack tide for some reason.

If you go westish, you come to the never never land of panto's and dreams. Out of the hell of the Solent. luckily not many Solentites get there. and most without manners are sent back sharp. Without discovering the majic. So. Come west but please bring the magic dragon or else!!

Even kills our enthusiasm out here whenever Auckland is mentioned. Even old Santa is going to give it a miss next year.

(A common tee shirt used to be "Auckland. Sydney for Beginners" - very true!)

Wave your wand, back to Haydn's west coast tour with the Panto.

Didn't look that bad when I passed through, but only spent a few hours there. Why disliked?

Has many of the problems of a much bigger city (although it is small by world standards with only a bit over 1 mil souls) with absolutely none of the benefits. Have lived there, have a number of times been asked to do so again, but doubt will ever do so unless for a short assignment.

Even though I am an NZ'er, if limiting choices to this part of the world I would choose Sydney, Melbourne (make BrianJ's day!), Brisbane, Hobart and probably Adelaide and Perth too (though not ever been to either of those last two, but by all accounts are as nice as the others), and Christchurch before Auckland. Pretty far down the list it would seem!

Stop farting about and get us back to West coast. We have done Solent to death. And Austrailia is worse than death. Get to the land of Black Puddings, Tripe and Treacle Mines!!

Think you've all lost the plot. Now nick, just get in the boat and go. Its not a long way and make sure you keep turning left or you'll end up in france. Now be quiet I wanna watch Red Dwarf.

It's a repeat. Unlike the far more interesting tales of the panto cast

It is obvious you have never been to Perth if you think it is merely as nice as Sydney and Melbourne. IMHO Melbourne is a city that you either love or hate, and it is not really to my taste.

Apart from the fact I was saying they are all better than Auckland, was not really trying to make comparisons. As I said I haven't been to Perth - one thing that could be unattractive to some people is that I believe that Perth is supposed to be the city in the world that is most distant from any other city (if you see what I mean - not sure I said that very clearly?).

Sat on the plane from Hobart to Sydney the other week with a girl from Perth - have to say she looked much better than Sydney /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
