Talking to the marina last weekend, they are having trouble with their free wifi service... its obviously frustrating them, and they have implied that they might turn it off...

Now, I made good use of the service last year, and would like to convince them that it is both popular and needed... so let me know if you either make use of this service as a resident or visitor, or are likely to be a visitor and would like/use the service while in the marina.... that way I can let them know how valued it is and maybe encourage them to not switch it off...

Ta!

I value the WiFi at Shotley.
It is one of the factors that make me decide to visit Shotley in preference to the other marinas in the area.
The lack of WiFi would tip things in favor of Suffolk Yacht Harbour.

We found the service invaluable as we stopped at Shotley in October on our way over to Holland and we could get the latest forecasts/pressure charts.
If they are having trouble with it, perhaps they need to speak to someone who knows how these things work.
I have many clients who work in that line of work so could pass details across.
Whatever you do, try and ensure they don't go down the route of charging like some places do.

Oh, forgot to mention -
One of our friends is a new bertholder in Shotley this year and will most certainly want to use the wifi (it will have been part of his decision when choosing Shotley over other places in the area).

I don't think the issue is whether to charge for it or not... more that its not been reliable, and as such is a lot of hassle for them..

Keep posting, as i'll point them at this thread... it could well help....

It maybe that I caught them on a bad day as well mind you!!

Weather is a factor and also, after time, the aerial/cable etc may degrade - in the same way as any other.
They should be able to buy a new aerial/cable etc for well under £100 as I installed a masthead aerial, low loss cable, access point and a router on my boat for less than £150.

Mind you - none of it said 'marine' on it!!!!

I don't think the problem is propogation either...

I checked the previous weekend, and was getting a strong signal.... I was successfully allocated an IP address, but no gateway address, so could n't get out to teh big bad world of the internet!....

Its a configuration problem, not a coverage/signal strength problem...

Its just they, understandably, don't have the skills in house to resolve it...

Ditto.
Neil, as you know, my intention in the short term is to launch and moor at Wells, that is short term and I will have to move around the coast to get some decent sailing time in. No wifi at Shotley means I will most definately be looking elsewhere. Having enough problems with TalkTalk at the moment (back on dial up, hence not here much) but the last thing I want is to move somewhere hours away and then have no internet. It may not be brilliant, but it's better than nothing.

Yep.
Definitely use it as a visitor several times a year, they have me and the boat on their computer.

Thanks for the heads up and please put my name in the pot.

As a new berth holder about to take up my mooring at Shotley I would be extremely disappointed if I got there to find I am not getting what I expected.

I believe that in a modern marina WiFi is a given, (charged or not).

As a berth holder for many years, I welcomed the 'free' wifi service and use it frequently. It would be a shame if it was discontinued. Maybe there is a techie berth holder who could offer some technical advice perhaps?

We use Shotley as a regular stop up and down East Coast during the season and value being able to use WIFI.
