Last night I finally got to see the "reality" programme (shown last Saturday) where a couple of guys start to sail around the UK. several questions came to mind.

Why did they wait to get to Padstow before getting a sea check

Why did a skipper with numerous atlantic crossings under his belt start the trip with insufficient safety gear (according to the safety check)

Why did Simon (who has sailed dinghys) not seem to know what a clew outhaul was

Why do I get the impression that this is going to be a potentially good series ruined by carefully rehearsed sponteneity, selective editing and the relentles persuit of drama

Why am I turning into a grumpy old man

Grumpy old man

Well you've found a place of like minded souls, most here are of a similar or worse persuasion.

What was this programme and is it one of a series?

WHY watch media crap - when we can all do much better (worse) !!

I always remember Howards Way .... started good - then went fast down the proverbial .... started with yacht design / building and sailing and soon became clothes and love rubbish ...

Re: Grumpy old man

ATLANTIC BRITAIN Channel 4

Saturdays 7pm

Writer and journalist Adam Nicolson has taken out a second mortgage to buy The Auk, a 42-foot sailing boat, to sail up the west coast of the British Isles. From the Scilly Isles up the west coast of Ireland, through the Hebrides, Orkney and beyond, it's a 1,500 mile sea journey along one of the world's most inspiring landscapes. But this particular explorer has been firmly rooted on dry land until now - never sailing anything bigger than a dinghy in his life...

Adam’s journey takes in the history of the west coast and looks at what originally drew people to live on the edge of the land. He meets those who still live here today, and sees how their lives are shaped by the power of the Atlantic.

The first leg of the journey takes us through one of the most wreck-strewn stretches of water in Britain, from Falmouth to the Scilly Isles. Threatened by a force seven storm, The Auk eventually arrives in the Scillys to find a community who have, over the centuries, come to rely on the bounty that shipwrecks bring for their own survival. Here, Adam dives down to what may be the oldest shipwreck in Britain before his journey on the surface continues.

As I said elsewhere - what a fantastic time to show the programme....whilst your all out sailing!!

Re: Grumpy old man

Force SEVEN STORM?
Is this the new media peoples more dramatic wind scale then?
Which means that force 5 must be a gale then

I didn't see the program. Is it worth setting the video for the next episode?

Re: Grumpy old man

Is this the same Adam Nicholson who owns the Shiant Islands - or has something to do with them?

'Auk' is now up for sale - if it is a Colin Archer type yacht.

NO - it was the LACK of the preliminary warning at the time of conception that brought him about.

Not sure my opinion is anything to go by as I'm not a saily type but I enjoyed it and will make a point of watching the next one.

Recently read the book - not a great book but the best bits were always about the huge tensions between the "concept" man (Nicolson), the skipper and the TV crew who needed every bit of action planned, re-planned then redone 10 times over from every angle.

I must try to catch the next episode to see the TV director's vision of Nicolson's vision of how sailing should be, whilst fighting the skippers attempts to keep things safe and a least slightly connected to reality.
