And then watch it leak like the Four Winns I tested! Side decks in my opinion are best, you then have more room to fit electronics and charts etc and no canvas in the way.

Then besidesthe build quality issue some boats arr built for the novice to buy and boat builders are very good at spotting what they want.
For a start it wont sell without wife approval so must have great big saloon, seats that turn into sun loungers, more loungers over there and some here. So wifey says lovely you can have one.
Course this guy's never been to sea before so it all looks ok!

Side decks have been used for extra cabin space.
Guard rails are for cosmetic use only.
Cleats are from B&Q's washing line accesery range.

In shory too moch is done to make it look the part and not much on doing it.

To prove the point have a look at a Nelson which is built like a submarine and will stand anything you can through at it.

Now we dont all need something that good unless we'er going to do some spare time work for the coast guards.

But you have to go some way, when buying a boat, to get something that at least addresses the fact that the sea is'nt all flat like on the post cards.

I fell for it with my first boat too. Wonderfull V8, 40 Knots.
Err then 20 gallon fuel tank, rain comming in every where,
the list go's on.
So now I have a Princess which, Ok I've put a few new parts on the Volvo engines. But the boat itself has never let me down and has ploded quite happly through shit that I dont care to be reminded of.

Its not suposed to look good its supposed to float!!

WhoooOOOoooOOOOO!!!!!

Oh, no! I feel the ghost of DF_Light coming back to the forum. Another newbie asking a perfectly simple question, now apparently needs to spend 8 million quid on an ex-coastguard icebreaker/submarine/aircraft carrier (nice wide decks, see?)

Someone better start telling him he should be locked up for being sick in the head for considering a boat that may run on the P*ss of Satan - PETROL

Re: WhoooOOOoooOOOOO!!!!!

I agree, it always seems to come back to this tack. Rather tiresome, the money being invested in even the smallest power boat represents a sizeable chunk. As has been said before if someone came into the pub and said I've just bought a seven year old Mondao - would you all turn round and go that's crap mate, should have bought a new S-Type. Course not! So why does it happen with boats?

Having said that, I've taken no stick for saying I'm off to look at a single engined Rinker 250. Prehaps I'm considered a lost cause <G>

Relax, they are only different opinions and you don't have to spend a fortune. Hopefully all the comments will help guide him though different aspects of boating and boats. I tell you I wished this BB was running in the 80's, it would have saved me allot with my early expensive learning curve!

Re: WhoooOOOoooOOOOO!!!!!

not at all - but make sure you ask matt for some negotiating tips!

I would start with an offer based on discounting the asking price by 10% for every month the boat has been on the market......on top of the initial 20% 'cos you have the money and he needs it! (Next April he will of course have the boat that you want to go boating in and the price goes back up every sunny day!)

Re: Negotiation Tips

Wow thanks Duncan - I will try these on Satuday if I don't sink her, if I play my cards right I should get the boat, and some cash to take it off his hands - or is that a bit optimistic!

Re: Negotiation Tips

Good, now you are learning how to be rich enough to afford a decent boat. Every time you trade up, you get richer and richer... Apparently, if you buy that old Leopard in the Netherlands, they'd actually give you enough money to buy a new one! And they'd even throw in matts every day for the first season (marina of your choice)

Re: Negotiation Tips (Free matts)

Hmm, a tempting offer but not sure I could cope. Mind you a free matts to give us a clue how to moor could be handy - SWMBO has trouble parking a car, lord knows how she will be with a boat. All though I have a feeling I will be on the bows apologising to everyone.

Re: Mooring tips (not matts)

I managed to escape huge humiliation from colin after his visit, fortunately managing the stern-to stuff but cocking up the alongside one. Hlb is the expert on mooring. On no account let wife do the mooring otherwise you will be at the edge of the boat with a fender - too close to the other people and they might hear you swearing at them.

Re: Mooring tips (not matts)

Yup 9/10 for stern to (only Bo Derrik is a perfect 10) but side on ? still not stopped sniggering. After much toing and froing Matt got it in beautiful position nice and straight only thing was it was ten feet out then took ages to get to pontoon. Still you can't laugh out loud, might have buggered off and lefft us standing there with a homeless weekend. I told him it was the wind that did it (dead calm at the time).

Best tip for mooring is ALWAYS blame the wind. Either too much, wrong direction or not enough.

Can't wait to see you moor the Leopard all on your own

Re: All becoming clear now...

Thanks Colin. Confirms my suspishuns. That "it's all included sir" is just a cover; Matt has PAID for the captain for the first season, till his driving improves, so he doesn't ding the LS23. What dya reckon?

Ooops. Dont mean a word of that if it harms my chances of a raz on the Beast.

Colin, have we missed something interesting?

I think we all deserve to hear what really went on. Which boat was involved, who was aboard, how much had everyone had to drink, what exactly was the wind force etc etc..................

3055 has deisel option.
Your right about "real" prices. It can be very hard to assertain what price a dealer will let a boat go for. Bayliner happily are very upfront though.

I've at least managed to get her up the steps and shown her how roomy the cabin is but she's just not interested, not even in discussing it. What made your wife come round? Is it as her confidence has grown?

Re: Where in the med?

The Balerics. Long season, mild winter. A/C def. 3055 has deisel option. Not too bothered about depreciation as plan to hang on to this boat. Aware fittings quality not as high but acceptable and price and interior volume outweigh this. Design/engineering main concern and real reason behind the question. So can you be more specific? Off to Genoa at the weekend to check out the Italian boats too.
