When I take a forced break from sailing my hands begin to moult, layers of skin that used to be hardened callosity begin to shed in great slaps, down to the soft pink skin underneath.

I have sometimes had to explain, "Oh, I'm not diseased, I'm just a sailor on hiatus."

They roll their eyes and I begin to look for bruises to prove it.
