.....no, it's a different post this time..... but why is it SB has been alive with discussions about the recent storms in the SW, and on MBM, virtually nothing has been mentioned?

Are they all "hard" nutters on the other side, who don't give a jot about the odd F10, or are we raggies a bunch of softies that get too excited about 70mph gusts?

Obvious

Would have thought it obvious....We don't go out unless it's +70 deg, F2 or below and the suns shining. Anything other than that is just not worth talking about.

Nothing to do with sailing really- I just like big weather and find it exciting. I think it brings out something in everyone, hence the fascination people have to go and watch, despite all the authorities telling us to stay in our nice cosy houses until the nasty weather goes away.

As for the windsurfers in Looe, good on them if they choose to go out in those conditions- just don't expect people to risk their lives rescuing them.

Re: Obvious

No Ken, I personally DON'T think we are all a bunch of softies!! I think we sailors (and I'm just about on the fronge of that!) do take more interest in the weather and it's ability to turn on us - we don't have 600hp to get us out of the mire if it all looks like turning nasty, and we do tend watch weather patterns more closely. Like another poster, I too am fascinated by the weather, and even if we are not intending to go out, still enjoy looking at the synoptics, tuning into the BBC forcasts etc. Mrs Nicho thinks I'm addicted to the subject. I'm just surprised the 'other side' felt no compunction to comment on the rather extreme conditons that have recently prevailed, and wondered why......?

Watching the weather

I wish the weather forecasts on the telly still included the isobars. These days you are lucky to even have a wind speed shown rather than the description "windy" or "Gales". I always liked to try to understand the rationale behind the forecast. These days I just go have a look at the isobar charts available on the net.

Re: Obvious

Like powerskipper said, we were all over here - wiggo and LJS, KevB etc were posting here, I was reading Poters predicament with some sorrow.

On MB they're boats are probably safely tucked up in marinas with a staff to look after them.

If they are at sea and it shows signs of blowing up they open the taps and fly for shelter - rarely more than perhaps 20 minutes away. If on land they can bury their head in the pillow and sleep knowing that someone else is keeping an eye on their boat.

Raggie's boats are probably on swinging moorings and rather exposed. The same distance from shelter in a raggie might take 5 or 6 hours, or more, so they have to take whatever blows up.

That's why it is!

(I know that there are exceptions to this so MBs please don't scream at me)
