Why don't many people post on here?

Perhaps sadly I have been observing the number of people viewing each of the forums over the last few days and the Mobo forum almost always has a lot more people viewing than the Lounge. It is currently over twice as many but during busy times it can be more than four times as many people viewing this forum yet there are a lot more posts on the Lounge (many not worth reading IMHO).

Maybe I have answered my own question given the tripe that seems to dominate in the Lounge but I am still left wondering why more people don't post more regularly on here when there seem to be hundreds viewing.

Just my idle thought for the day.........

The lounge seems a sort of "nut house" for irrelevant trivia, ramblings and rants of those who like to be heard (in fairness not all but most). Motorboat and Scuttlebutt seem more relevant, interesting and the content generally of substance. Posters here and on SB seem to only post if they have something of value to contribute. Quality has proven better than quantity. Facebook, Twitter, etc, have also reduced traffic on special interest group internet bulletin boards such as this.

I think your are probably right but I am still curious about the apparent disparity between the numbers viewing and the number of posts......

You have to be a registered user to view the lounge. All other forums are open for all to view. And I agree, the lounge seems to be mainly populated by the monster raving looney party cast offs:)

Might one of the reasons be that the same questions are repeated over a period of time, resulting in a response referring to "ybw......."?

Well first of all readers of the Forum are interested in the information - even if they have nothing to add, and even registerred members of the forum may have a quick look without loggin in, so you cant really see whether viewers are also registerred members.

One reason for not writing in the Forum is that fact that some forumites really sable other opinions. I good discussion (colregs) is fine but just because somebody "know" better doest need to be reason for bad tone

IMHO, its because moboers are using their boats less due to the general economic situation and the price of fuel so there are fewer cruise reports and fewer tales to tell

Presumably this was why it was created, to avoid cluttering up the main forums?

We have a kind of forum system at work. There's one guy, bit of a weirdo, who used to annoy people with many of his posts, dragging sensible discussions off down stupid tangents. The solution was for the admins to create him his very own forum to post that kind of stuff in, keeping the main threads clear but allowing him to continue and those of us who find him amusing in small doses to read them if we wish.

Not sure all the viewers are actually individuals, but may be search engines and what I believe are called "crawlers" which scan public sites such as this.

As someone once said, "If you're looking for a committed person, try looking in an Asylum" AKA the Lounge.

Sometimes we get drivel posted on the MOBO forum, some even post on here as if it's facebook:eek:,

But in the main it's informative, useful, humorous, and occasionally cynical drivel;)

I would post more pictures if it was easier to do. Using photobucket is OK, but the extra effort is just a faff. (yes I am getting lazy) Why cant we just cut and past pices at full size rather than as thumbnails and be able to easily type text below each picture?

Have to say that I agree. I intended to pst about our cruise this year but haven't got round to it yet partly because it is such a phaff.....

Using bucket is easy,

putting text above

or below the image

easier still;)

The search facility on the forum may also be a cause, with people using it to find the answer to any boat question as most have been covered previously, where as I'm guessing in the earlier days all questions would have been posted as there wasn't the database of info back then. The search facility is great, but I do agree that forum has to be kept alive. Personally I think it's a great forum, and note to self I should input more.

IMHO a big factor is the email notification system. I don't know about anyone else but it seems like a completely random thing. Sometimes I get notifications of posts that have nothing to do with any posts I've made and sometimes I don't get notifications of replies to posts I have made. Often I go back into threads and by chance, find a post in reply to a post of mine but I never received any notification of it. This could be a reason that some threads die prematurely. I know I keep harping on about the previous versions of the forum but the email notification system on those worked perfectly for me but on this latest version, it doesn't

I only joined in June and prior to that I think I was what is known as a "lurker" for a few weeks, but even in that short time I have noticed that what used to be quick-fire conversation / banter has slowed down a bit, but put it down to members doing things rather than talking about things. I wonder if its a seasonal issue ?

For me stuck here with spreadhseets and models, a quick look at the forum during the day provides some welcome diversion therapy, and seeing a video of a flat calm sea a couple of days ago reminded me that the hassle at work is all worth it .... that said the forecast this weekend is shocking ...

Speak for yourself :)

All of our reports end up in the Thames (and inland) Forum rather than on here though.
