My wife and I were looking through the forum the other night and we started to wonder why we call ourselves what we do here.

Me - our boat's called Hinewai - an Moari word that roughly translates to "Daughter of the Water" - hence "Hinewaisman".

Jean - the "Sea Gypsy" - enough said.

What of you?

Mine was just very randomly chosen as an unusual name, i've had monkfish24 for years and i use it for everything, xbox online, email, forums, games.

Having gone through various ID's ...

My very first one in the late 90's here ? Cannot even remember what it was .. maybe Solentlife ? But later when Forums were restarted after the hacking incident, Kim re-instated my login as my name .... that stayed for quite a time as I couldn't be bothered to change it. My wife looked over a decent Moody one time and she took on Moody1 as her handle ... but she got fed up with forums and doesn't post now. I had changed mine by then to Small Boat Champ which led to daft mimicry so was shortened to SBC ...
I left and login was erased ... later was asked to return and I thought I'd like a different ID to delay the inevitable remarks ... my work is Marine Surveying and ownership of Petrochem Laboratories ... and we blend fuels as part of our sentence in life ! So 'Refueler' was chosen ...

I was surprised how long it took long-standing forumites to realise who 'Refueler" was ... I was not going to give game away too soon !!

Taking it further, as to boat names .. my first boat was Nijoy - based on amalgam of wifes and my name ... Nigel + Joyce ... Sold that one on and next was called Haven Lady in an attempt to get the club to give me a mkooring in The Haven !! Failed dismally ...
Next boat previous owner had renamed it Superanne after he bought it with a Superannuation payment ... NOT as most thought - based on his wifes name which was NOT Anne.
I have other boats as well ... the weekender formally VE1980, is now Lady Lou ... my surname is Luther .. another is LuLu ... again based on my surname ... I have another boat to name which is a sister to LuLu ... so maybe that becomes LuLu 2 ... might even get away with using the one SSR !! OOOOH !!

Do I see another tread starting - "why's your boat called....?"

Hinewai was Hinewai II when we bought her - dropped the II, but went through the whole of Vigor's Interdenominational Boat Denaming Ceremony.

After 24 hours, a few friends came down for the renaming. At the time we were up in the yard so could do the spray from the balcony of the bar.

One friend, bless her, bought a bottle of fizzy. “Sea Gypsy” did the old “I name this ship “ etc words, shook and popped the bottle – and sprayed our deck with fizzy Red Burgandy. Took months for the stains to fade.

The friend? “Oh, I though it would be nice – she’s got a burgandy hull…”

Not being good at thinking these things up when I first joined a forun a name was needed and in desperation I picked the class of ourt boat a Maxi 77. When I moved on to a Moody I contemplated a name change but I am known in seveal places as Maxi now so I kept it.

As long-standing forumites have heard many times, mine is my boat name. The origin was a Times crossword clue: Large cat small weight (5)

It's the first network login I ever got, on my uni's unix system in the 90ies. Consists of the first three letters of my first name and the first two of my surname. Have used it for everything networky ever since.
