I have just received a letter from MCA informing me that if I do not submit an application and £25 fee my registration will terminate. Should I care if I am terminated??

Only if you intend taking your boat abroad, in which case it is virtually essential. If you only sail in UK waters it is optional and has no real practical value.

Your choice.

Same RYA Site has a section on taking your boat abroad. Suggest you read it before going so you know what to expect.

I thought it was supposed to be displayed on the port-hand side? ... or has that changed:)

The paperwork which came with our SSR registration 8 yrs ago said the number should be displayed on both sides, which is what I did. I must confess I didn't read the stuff which came with the more recent renewal.......

What's the general consensus, for those of you who sail abroad, part 1 or part 3?

Cheers

Either. If you just want identification then Part 3 is fine. If you want registration of title as well then go Part 1 but be aware for an existing boat this can be expensive and long winded. Full explanation of the differences on the RYA Site.

Depending on resources available I'd suggest that it isn't *that* expensive and long winded though yes, more involved and costly than part 3. In addition to the fee (£124 for the first 5 years then £49/year thereafter) you have to have your survey for tonnage which is an approved surveyor with a tape measure (don't remember how much, less than £200 for sure). The only particularly annoying part about the processes is that the MCA department concerned won't tell you if your chosen name is taken before you apply. You have to apply and list your alternative choices. And I didn't find the ladies in that department to be particularly "customer focused"....

If you are in the water you need to add a lift to that, which brings the total to around £500. Bit different from £25 for the SSR every 5 years.
