From BYM.
"UK. Top boating magazine gets new editor
Released 10 September 2002

Sarah Norbury has been appointed editor of the UK’s best selling boating magazine Practical Boat Owner.

Norbury replaces Roger Witt who left his post of PBO editor last week, after working for the magazine for 35 years. She has been editor of Yachting Monthly since 1999, having previously worked on Classic Boat and Motor Boat and Yachting."

Why?

I know, I know,,,,,,,,, but really, why?
YM and PBO have a history of long serving editors, MG and DS, DD and RW,,,,,,,,,,, What changed?
" " there comes a time when it's right to move on," he said."
,,,,,, well yes,,,,,, but why?
I really would like to know .
When you have been a more or less loyal reader, from the start in the case of PBO, and for nearly fifty years (good grief!) in the case of YM, you get attached to people you know?

Not a hope, Ian!

As yet they are not even confirming or denying the rumour that's been floating around about Sarah Norbury. Far less the one that there could be a merger in the pipeline.

I suggest you get down to SBS and ply the hacks and/or hackettes with Guinness if you want to get to the bottom of this. Then do report back!

Rumour? What rumour?

Ian,

Firstly, although I am not the publisher of PBO and YM I'm sure I am on very sound ground in denying emphatically that there is any possibility of a merger between the two titles.

Secondly, if you check out the following link to our business site http://www.ybw.com/ibinews/newsdesk/20020810123454ibinews.html you'll see the announcement regarding Sarah Norbury's appointment. So in fact there was no chance for rumour because the announcement went out pretty much at the same time as it was announced internally.

The next editions of the magazines will be carrying full details of the changes but the bare detail is that Sarah is moving to take over editorship of PBO and Paul Gelder will be Acting Editor for YM.

Okay, think I now understand how conspiracy theories start /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I assumed from AndrewB's post that he was hinting at a rumour of YM and PBO merging. Easiest way of putting that one straight is to say that there are no plans to merge any of our titles. Guess that just about covers it...

Re: Rumour? What rumour?

Rumours of mergers are nowt to do with me,,,,,,,,, though now you mention it one good permenant editor might be better than half a dozen short term temps,,,,,,,,,,,,
,,,,,,,,, but I'd still love to hear about the internal politics that got rid of Roger, shifted Sara and left an assistant in charge of YM.
Whistle blowers can e-mail me direct, I shan't let on, honest. ;)

Re: Rumour? What rumour?

When Denny D retired, he was succeded by George T. He had been Assistant Editor with Denny as editor and myself as Ad Manager from the start (1st issue published Jan 1967 - sold 82,000!!!).

When George took retirement I understand that the editorship was offered to Rodger but he turned it down.

An outside editor was then appointed but was not a success so Rodger accepted the position - I suspect reluctantly.

As a reluctant editor he has lasted much longer in the position than I would have ever expected - I believe that he is a true, very genuine, sailing/yachting journalist but not keen on the admin/meetings side of the editor's job in a modern large organisation.

I am writing this as I believe that Roger is not keen on computers, per se, and probably does not read this forum.
