Why are diesel engines considered more reliable than petrol engines.

.......How many Yanmars, Betas, Nannis etc etc etc have been sunk and are used as tackle when they could have been rebuilt?????

My Perkins 4-107 was taken out of a Rustler 31 for being a touch smoky ... replaced with about 3.5K's worth of Beta ....
2 odd years later I come along - pick up the Perky for 250 quid ... drop it into my boat to replace the seized 4-99 ... years later it's STILL plodding along like a good'un ....

I've had diesel mechanics, other boaters on board etc. - general opinion ? She's a good'un and sounds like she'll go for another 35 - 40 yrs !
