Why are Bavarias so unloved??

To me they are just another ordinary boat, sailing's answer to my Ford Mondeo.
There's not much really wrong with them, they just don't inspire. Too much like all the other latest models.

Also the cry of 'Achtung Bavaria' is used as a quick warning of approaching sailing school activity. The fact that so many sailing schools use them suggests to me that they are a sensible choice, if you want that sort of boat. So you get mistaken for a charter or sailing school if you have one.

If it suited the way I wanted to use my boat (perhaps if I wanted to charter it out), I'd have one though, just as I have a Mondeo, because it does the job. But I don't go around describing myself as a Mondeo enthusiast! my Mondeo could just as well be some other bland 4 wheel thing by Vauxhall/Toyota/Skoda. I don't really single out Bavarias to be uninspired by, I feel much the same about most other makes. Bav's just symbolise the whole genre.

But then these days I don't feel jealous of people who have nice boats, I'm jealous of people who have the opportunity to get good use out of whatever boat they have.

Bavarias had a problem with their keels a few years ago ......

But not this one that spent the night on a lee shore in a F6/7 ... out on charter the next day.

What does either point prove?

A lot of the Bav bashing seems to be about trying to establish positions in a pecking order and some individuals reinforcing for themselves their own choice of boat...

What, as in all the "You're just jealous because I've got a 42 footer and you haven't" posts? Of course, they come from the other side ...

'Server no currently available' ...... lost last post .... sensorship?

It's time for a reality check. 30 knots should not be survival weather in a well found yacht, and 45 knots only really becomes a problem if it is against a 4 knot current on a long fetch.

The Bav on the beach photo show pretty benign conditions. It's the waves that do the damage.

Why did the Bav end up on the beach anyway? Were they using the lunch hook supplied by Bavaria? If they had used even a 45lb CQR or Bruce they wouldn't have gone ashore in the first place.

As for being in service the next day ....... 'if it floats : use it'!

You're really unbelievable. You don't know the story so you have to introduce a total fantasy.

It was Portsmouth Harbour entrance.

The boat was motoring along the small ships channel.

The engine stopped.

The wind was f 6/7 onshore.

Approx 15 seconds after the failure the boat hit the hard shingle beach and was lifted up and down until the tide receded.

It survived.

What exactly is your problem?

I am just taking the mick... I really like the 341... a very nice boat... but I was always abit dubious about the wickerwork in the interior... I dont know if your 341 still has that though! I was put off getting a 312 because I could see myself falling across the saloon and like a idiot putting my hand straight through it... note the wicker panneling on the cabinets on this 341..

Welcome to the party!

It would appear, that people go out of their way to fine anything wrong with a Bavaria however small, IMO they will stand up against any british made boat. Like for like.

I have to say I haven't been particularly fond of bavs - and have even been a bav basher and keel laugher in the past - but I think the new 32 looks a super boat and very good value for money.

I'm not in the market for a bigger new boat right now but I think that it ticks a lot of boxes and at last a bav that sails as well as practically anything else out there.

Given that all the other sailing boat manufacturers seem to be giving up the ghost, judging by LBS, then they must be doing something right!!!
