Absolutely right. And err umm, it ain't a City. Got turned down in favour of Chelmesford didn't it. Second to Chelmesford? Kind of puts it into perspective.

What is so great about being a city? I know that Colchester Borough Council applied for city status, but I never understood why. Some seemed to think that it would bring more jobs, but I never understood that thought either - Why would an employer come to Colchester just because it is called a city rather than a town?

I appologise for a bit of drift here...
The old post office in Maldon has been vacant for the past 9 orso years. It is listed. Every planning approach is stopped by the one Jackie Longman, the Conservation officer. She has her own idea of what she wants the building to beused for and puts the down on everything else. However, her project needs public money and there is none so the building is falling down.....

Conservation officers are a law to themselves and highly unprofessional to boot. I woudn't touch a listed building these days.

Argyll & Bute has (or at least had) a troll of a conservation officer like that; I know someone who's an elder of the local kirk, they obtained planning for converting their dilapidated church hall into flats after a long struggle, some of it negotiating with the planners but most of it fighting with the idiot bearded poltroon conservation officer. Despite it being blindingly obvious there was no economic use for the building other than some sort of residential development, he forced them to have business plans made for restaurants and galleries, all of which had numbers so dismal my wallet vibrated just reading them.

The Canterbury water tower sold for £120,000 a few years ago, as yet no development, but as the income from all the aerials, antennae, and assorted relays which are hung all over it is north of £15000 it's not a great problem.
:D

... until you move in and your brain is microwaved whilst you sleep!

Copper roof; the Grand Designs answer to the tinfoil hat! :D

As for the poor sod who's turned £330k into £190k, he presumably bought it at the height of the lunacy pre-2008, if he had held onto it for another 5 years chances are he'd get his money back as the SE is bubbling again. You could re-roof that thing 10 times for £1m, someone's having a laugh with numbers.

I agree. Never understood why everything to do with money is centred around the City of London. Much nicer in North Norfolk, or even Wick. House prices a lot cheaper and no need for commuting.

I have always thought that people who willingly commute to the City from somewhere nice like Essex are a bit daft in the head.
